Marcy Playground: Sex and Candy Meaning
Song Released: 1997
Sex and Candy Lyrics
Downtown by myself
And i had so much time to sit and think about myself
And there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah there she was
Like disco superfly
I smell sex and candy here
Whos that loungin in my chair
Whos that...

It’s not that deep… it’s about liking a girl and he wanted to use a bunch of disco phrases “platform double suede” so he did and sex and candy refers to something his at the time gf’s roommate said when she walked in when he was in their dorm room he also mentions that his gf was older than him so while it could be about drugs it could also have been that girls jab at him being a kid (candy) dating someone older (sex)

As we all know the physical words "Sex and Candy" in the song have a story behind them. The song itself is way more complex.
To me the narrator of the song is singing about the feelings he's having following not a break up with a partner of several years but a short fling with someone (in this case a woman) who after a short period of time coldly ditched him. The woman most likely had a agenda to use the narrator for some quick short term validation both for sexual and other personal means. The narrator on the other hand may have entered the relationship with good intentions and hence got emotionally invested therefore falling into a trap. Listening to not just the somber tone of the singer but the grungy, arousing, and even groovy melody of the music (especially the guitar) it's clear that the narrator has a roller coaster of emotion following the fling that is mentally eating him from the inside.
Let me start with the chorus : I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream
Yeah mama this surely is a dream
Yeah mama this surely is a dream
To me this is the narrator reiterating to himself the feelings he had with the woman; i will add that my guess is that the narrator has either not been in a relationship for awhile or has a lack of love and sex in his life therefore making him vulnerable. Beside from the physical sex that was engaged in between the two (hinted by the first line in the chorus), the woman probably gave him a false feeling of both physical and emotional validation. With an agenda in mind she probably made him feel like he was everything to her. He more than likely felt a legit connection to her (hence validated by her sweet deceiving words). She probably made him feel as thou he had found "the one". The devious stares she gave him (and without a doubt he gave back) indicates that he may have felt in love and her "devious stares" may have indicated that she felt the same. Adding the physical sex to the equation the narrator probably truly felt like he was living a dream.
Sooner than later the woman coldly ditched him once her needs were met. This is where the versus come in.
The narrator must feel a mixture of hurt, sadness, and anger as well as the feelings of (toxic) attachment for her that are still clinging onto him and don't seem to want to let go.
Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think about myself
And then there she was
The woman in the song might be physically gone but the emotional and sexual validation that he felt days before are lingering. Add that to the heartbreak, sadness, and anger at getting used the narrator is doing whatever he can to distract himself form thinking of her but no matter what he does he can't. It's impossible. No matter what he does to keep the thought of her from his mind she out of nowhere just appears hence taking him back to his undertow of emotions. On one hand the thought of her feels good but shortly the pain and sadness from heartbreak rush right back to him giving him headaches and him not being able to think straight.
The whirl pool of emotions damage him and stresses him draining all his energy. -
I thought it was about being with a younger broad and they have sex alot. shes young so she likes sitting in his chair. its a dream for him to be with someone younger. Double cherry pie because shes young and maybe a virgin and has to think alot if he wants to be with her. devious stares because being with an older guy comes off as dangerous.

He's remembering a fling he had with an older girl in college. Her roommate walked in on them having sex and said, the room smelled like sex and candy. Maybe he masturbating to the memory.

I think it’s about getting cheated on. He’s downtown thinking about things and he sees her with another man. When he says whose that sitting in my chair he’s referring to the guy his girlfriend cheated on him with whose sitting in his chair after the affair. He can see the man looking at him deviously which kinda makes it seem like he’s a part of his friend group. I smell sex and candy refers to him suspecting the affair. He hasn’t caught her cheating on him, but he’s sure it’s happening. When he says mama this surely is a dream he’s hoping it’s not real. It’s all imagined. This also fits in with the somber lonesome tone.

I love how this shit just flew right over the heads of all the mainstream radio folks for years. Sex and Candy is referring to sex on methamphetamine. Candy is slang for meth. Also the "she" in the song is most likely referring to the meth not an actual woman. As the song is more likely referring to gay sex or at the very least anal sex. Hence the smell of sex and candy. "Who's that casting deviant stares in my direction" portrays the paranoia associated with amphetamine psychosis. He's sitting alone having had too much caffeine "trying to fill the void left by the lack of meth" and then there she was, "meth" tempting him. After days on meth everything begins to feel like a dream.

It is what it is perhaps? Never been downtown hangin’ and was laa? There she was. I write and usually about an experience digested to lyric or poetry’s. There it is ..

I seen the interpretations of this song and they all mention that the singer himself claimed that the phrase "sex and candy" was one given by his friend who walked in on the singer and his girlfriend (at the time).
That part is cleared up but the rest of the song has a much different feel to it.
The music video and the lyrics have a very lonely and somber undertone to it. In fact it goes two ways and I will be brief about it:
He is literally dreaming of someone unattainable in real life and his attitude seems to be more of a look but don't touch sort of idea. At the same time it could be parallel to a woman in real life that he fantasizes about and can literally dream about her. Either way, he is isolated from he because he has no way of reaching her. The song itself, however, is tongue in cheek. You don't need to feel awful about those who you can't get with, rather marvel at them and let go of loneliness, possibly a message of encouragement to stop dreaming and start taking action on a women you took so much time to marvel at.
