   You have to put this song in context, both lyrically and commercially. First, it was the time of Free Love, and things like booty calls and phone sex, adultery and multiple lovers were becoming open parts of the culture, unlike the decades before: the post-war 40s and 50s. So it's a song about wanting to 'scratch that itch'. The pleas become increasingly dramatic, suggesting that the singer might actually die if he doesn't get him some o' dat. We've all been there, gentlemen. (Refer to "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "You're Every Woman In the World to Me", "If I Had a Million Dollars", etc.
   
   I like to think, though, that Marvin was really, really coked up with Rick James and a bunch of other cool cats, and he was super-horny, as such effect coke will have, and he thought "I wonder what I can get away with in a radio song? I'm gonna write about how I am critically horny right now and what the doctor ordered to fix said horniness". They put it on the radio, and now all of us have a song to cue up on our playlist when it's time to close the deal, in case that special someone isn't quite getting your subtle hints (see "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", etc).
