Neil Diamond: Play Me Meaning
Song Released: 1972
Play Me Lyrics
-
This song is a metaphor for inspiration coming from God. She is the Holy Spirit. You are the sun I am the moon refers to how our lives are to be a reflection of Christ. As though I'd done something wrong is the guilt fallen man has in his soul. Whssat was good became me refers to assimilating as much godliness that we can. Wandering a path that was thorned and narrow refers to worldly pursuits. Another place another grace refers to God's willingness to extend grace daily. This beautiful metaphor is about a Jew who has accepted Christ despite his upbringing telling him that Christianity was a hoax. I love this song and find it extremely personal. I was raised as a Jew and am now messianic.

The interpetation of the relationship between Neil and his guitar makes sense. The reference of the "she" does not mean its a woman by default. People often reference things like cars as a she, so why would we not think Neil does the same with his guitar? " I am the words you are the tune, play me" Neil provides the words and his guitar provides the tune. This is a song about the relationship between the instrument and the artist working together to create magic.

This is a song in my opinion about Neils guitar and his love with it. "She was morning, and I was night time
I one day woke up
To find her lying beside my bed
I softly said "Come take me"
For I've been lonely in need of someone
As though I'd done someone wrong somewhere
But I don't know where, I don't know where
Come lately
You are the sun, I am the moon
You are the words, I am the tune
Play me"
Song she sang to me
Song she brang to me
Words that rang in me,
Rhyme that sprang from me
Warmed the night, and what was right
Became me
You are the sun, I am the moon
You are the words, I am the tune
Play me -
Obviously Neal desires to be pleasured by a woman's touch.
