I've heard Jim also told the press his father and mother died in a terrible accident, probably because he was ashamed of them, especially of his father: Jim was against the Vietnam war but his father had a lot power in this war: he was high ranked and made a lot of decisions about how to fight the war. Maybe this is another way for Jim to tell people his parents don't exist for him.
