I don't think this song is about them(Prince and Apollonia 6), being two different people, like previously mentioned above. While
Prince was the dove who cried in my opinion, because he could never have a mate. Prince didn't want to become,
"Like my father two fold"
and become a woman beater like his dad often a appeared to do. -
Doves stay with one mate, when doves cry I believe it is because these two people are so in love with one another but they can't be together because they have commented to their own life choices, before they knew one another, they had choice their life styles. For instance one may be a substances abuse, the other a Sunday school teacher. "How can two walk together and both have different ideals of how one desires to appreciate their life choices. So they cry in silence, longing for one another. Forbidden desire. Now that is sad, but such is life, I can't love you and me both. So I chose me. That's why doves cry. Love is never enough, only with Jesus

When Doves Cry is about the contradiction and ulltimate tragedy of two beautiful people who are meant to be together but just can't seem to get along. The reality of their realtionship is as tragic and contradictory as two doves crying. How sad. How ultimately sad.
