Rainbow: The Temple of the King Meaning
The Temple of the King Lyrics
Came a time remembered well,
When the strong young man of the rising sun
Heard the tolling of the great black bell.
One day in the Year of the Fox,
When the bell began to ring,
It meant the time had come...

In an interview in 1975 with Jon Tiven: Blackmore has said that the song describes a spiritual journey to the mysterious Temple Of The King, where he finds his answer. Blackmore, who was into yoga long before it was trendy, said that he was watching a show called Yoga for Health when he got the idea for the song. -

Long ago, in a time when the world was still shrouded in mystery, there was a young man from the rising sun. He was strong and full of vigor, with a heart that burned with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and adventure. And so, when the tolling of the great black bell echoed through the land, he knew that his time had come.
It was the day of the fox, a time of remembrance and reflection, and the young man knew that he had to go to the temple of the king. He had heard the stories of the temple, a place of great power and wisdom, and he knew that he had to go there if he ever wanted to find the answers that he sought.
And so he set out, walking for days through the dense forest and over the rugged hills, until he finally arrived at the temple. There, in the middle of a great circle, he stood, searching and seeking, his trembling hand reaching out for the answers that he so desperately craved.
And then, as if by magic, he found it. With just one touch of his hand, the answers he sought were revealed to him, and he was filled with a sense of wonder and awe that he had never felt before.
As he made his way back to the people in the circle, he felt different. He was filled with a newfound sense of purpose and understanding, and he knew that he had to share his knowledge with others. With just a wave of his strong right hand, he set out to teach others what he had learned, to spread the knowledge and understanding that he had gained from his journey to the temple of the king.
And so he spent his days traveling from village to village, teaching and sharing his newfound knowledge with anyone who would listen. And wherever he went, the people welcomed him with open arms, for they could see the shine in his eyes, the mark of one who had been to the temple of the king and had found the answers that they too sought.
But as time went by, the young man began to realize that the more he shared his knowledge, the more he seemed to learn. And so he continued to travel, always seeking and searching for new knowledge and understanding, and always sharing what he had learned with others.
And in the end, he realized that the journey to the temple of the king had taught him more than he ever could have imagined. -
It's meaningless. It means what ever you want it to. If it can mean any thing, it means nothing. I looked through the preceding comments and there were several interpretations which proves my point. One thought it was a boxing match and another, human sacrifice.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

By saying “Year of the Fox” maybe the writer/singer wants to paraphrase something from the Chinese Horoscope. Fox, as an animal, isn't in it's circle. So, it's invented for.. songwriting purposes.

It's Dark Souls lore. Strong young man of the rising Sun: Solaire. Temple of the King: Anor Londo. Great black bell: bells of awakening. That part about rush of a thousand wings: escape from Undead Asylum. Edge of the world: Dark Souls II first cutscene. You get it. Dark Souls keeping it real 1975

Far from the circle of the edge of the world he's hoping wondering - Flat Earth Maybe???

It’s about the coming “king” who will build the third temple. It’s all about the time, his power & all that’s been written about him to be fulfilled!

Its about facing and emerging victorious of any personal challenges or trials that the one faces in life. The temple of the king is the temple with-in or oneself in which the trial (testing times) is held. One goes in with "trembling hands" "fearful" and "seeing and Feeling" of what "people" will think of us and how things are going to go in the trail. But once it starts one becomes more powerful and gain an upper hand or a "strong right hand" as the trial progress. Finally the one ends up being the king of the temple upon emerging victorious in the trial.
Atleast that's what I get from it. -
Maybe it's a depiction of an execution. A man is being executed in the middle of the circle, at dawn, at the edge of the death and the afterlife. There all answers will be found.

It might be suggested that the meaning of this song might have something to do with the very old Chinese culture. Is this a viable idea to any ones knowledge?

temple of the king - Solomon's temple.
great sun - much could be said on this. but mostly it's god - the oness. The father. one is all.
year of the fox - ss animal alchemy symbols, foxes are the cultivators of the Elixir of Life. They were also thought to be able to transform themselves into human form at night and visit the elderly, giving them sips of the mystical Elixer to prolong their life and health. As a solar animal, the fox is symbol of fire and all this meaning entails. I've written another page on this website about other persepectives and symbolic information on the fox here.
rush of a thousand wings -In ancient Egypt, winged gods were protective gods. They protected creatures, covering them with their wings, as well as surrounding walls, enclosures and temples which doors were adorned with a winged image of Amon-R‚. The union of Butho, the snake, and Nekhebet, the vulture, representing respectively Lower and Upper Egypt, will give birth to a winged snake (similar to Quetzalcoatl, the well known Plumed Serpent of the Aztecs), symbolizing the union of Earth and Heaven. In Christian tradition, wings are associated with the light of the Sun of Justice that illuminates the Intelligence of the Just. God protects man with the shadow of his wings (Psalm). When man separates himself from God, he loses his own original wings. Angels are the purest expression of winged spirit. In Greece, Hermes had winged heels, symbol of the traveller and the messenger, of dreams, of impulse, of movement. The Greeks represented Love and Victory with wings. According to Plato, wings represent Intelligence and Understanding. That is the reason why they are associated with certain fabulous animals, such as Pegasus, representing the sublimation of the specific symbolism of the animal.

The reference to the WW2 is smart althought I don't see it like this.
Dio used to write text about medieval and fantastics theme.
For me "the tolling of the great black bell" is a call to sacrifice for the strong young man (a countryman in Japan maybe !). Kind of imaginery ritual... -

thousand wings - tora tora planes
