Rascal Flatts: What Hurts the Most Meaning
Song Released: 2006
What Hurts the Most Lyrics
That don't bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I'm not afraid to cry every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days...

I know a lot of people on the request boards were wanting another interpretation, so here I go... It doesn’t take a lot of deep digging to find this song’s meaning, actually. This is a pretty standard song about a girl leaving a guy, but the catch is that she never even knew that he loved her. When he said goodbye to her one last time, he could have told her everything, but he didn’t (this is the chorus). This is where the chorus comes from. The verses are about his feelings for her and him going through life after she’s gone. The real catch that makes me think that this is an honest, heartfelt song is the part "I can take the rain off the roof of this empty house / That don’t bother me". He’s basically saying that he would, and could, do anything for her without regrets or complaints.

Ok I'm pretty sure this is the meaning of the song. The girl is going out with a boy but he's older than she is and the dad doesn't like him. So he breaks them up*. The boy then gets into a car accident and dies. And the song is talking about how she can't get over it.
Ps watch the music video.

You guys are all right. I lost a really good friend of mine about a month ago, and this song played at her funeral. So whenever I hear it, I think of my friend. She was very close to me, and truly an angel on earth! Either way you interperate it, it's a good song.
Thanks,
mandi

Honestly, the last person is right. It is based of the video, and all you gotta do is listen. Its about a teenage couple who are in love, and the father doesn't like her boyfriend, so he makes him leave. And him and his girlfriend got in some fight over it...And he got in a car accident...And died. And to me it seems as tho..She never really told him how much she loved him..And towards the end of the video..How she starts chasin after his truck. To me..I think that she didn't chase after him the time he did leave, and now it gets her all the time, so she's doin it this time, and ends up where he was killed...This video makes me cry, this has happened to me once before, but we did love eachother..Which makes it worse.

Ok I agree that not all songs are what the video is based off of but the video and lyrics actually go together all you have to do is listen!!
The song is about a teenage couple who happen to be very much in love, and obviosly the dad doesn't like the boyfriend so he makes him leave well on the way to wherever he's going he is thinking bout the girl and he has an accident!!!
I don't know that's just me so ya!!!!! -
I think this song is about losing someone he loved very much (whether it be death or her leaving him) but I think it's about her leaving him. and they fought so much that his wife or girlfriend or whatever had enough of it. So whe walked away. and what he may mean by
What hurts the most
was being so close
and having so much to say
and watching you walk away
I think he means that they were close as to being together but they fought so much that he didn't get to tell her ever that he loved her or any of those good things, and when he realized it, she was already gone.
And never knowing
what could've been
and not seeing that lovin' you
is what I was tryin' to do
Now that she's gone, he won't get to tell her all those good things because she's gone and she won't come back. even though he was maybe bossy, jealous, overprotective, whatever, he did these things out of love for her, though it wasn't easy to see.
A lot of people like to say that the song's about what the video is based off of when it sometimes isn't. So I don't think the video explains what the song may actually mean.
