Rise Against: Make it Stop (September's Children) Meaning

Make it Stop (September's Children) Lyrics
Bang bang go the coffin nails, like a breath exhaled,
Then gone forever.
It seems like just yesterday, how did I miss the red flags raise?
Think back, the days we laughed.
We braved these bitter storms together.
Brought to...

The way I see it the song is about bullying and hatred directed to members of the LGBT community. Yes, not ALL of the people mentioned were gay, but they were all harassed because people thought they were gay. For all of them, the harassment pushed them towards suicide, and the people who harassed them got off free. The song is saying that this needs to stop and questions 'God' for putting these kids through this if he exists (as not everyone who reads this may be religious)

This is a great song about those who lost their lives for being bullied just for being gay.I'm not gay but i've been called gay and yeah it hurted and i also wanted to kill myself, but hearing this its just sad.

This song is obviously about gay children. "Children shamed for those they chose to kiss." big notation right there. This could also in fact be pointed to children who have gove through, or still do go through the hell of self-mutilation. Being one of those kids, this song is somewhat of a war cry to stop the violence and discrimination towards these decisions. Sure, cutting yourself is bad enough, but we don't need people encouraging us to do this.

i think this song is not only about the gay suicides in september 2010, but about bullying, and its effects it has on people. i havent done much research on the september suicides, but i would like to say that i am deeply sorry for all the friends and family involved in this tragic act. Rest In Piece. i have gay friends, and they are not different at all. the only different thing about them, is their choice in sexuality. i just wish that other people could see this. dont get me wrong, it is weird hearing about my friends boyfriend, but its his choice, not mine. he can do what he wants, as long as he is happy with his life and im happy with mine. me and my girlfriend are really good friends with him and his boyfriend, and we have a normal friendship. there is nothing wrong with him because he is gay. as said before, i wish that other people could see that there is nothing wrong with gays, and that they are just like us in every way except that they want a different sexual desire. As stated above, my deepest concerns go towards the all the family and friends effected in this. Rest In Piece boys, you will never be forgotten

This song has such a powerful meaning. It calls for action. It calls for America to stop being so horrendous and accept homosexual teenagers as who they are. Do I care If a guy likes a guy? Or if a girl likes a girl? No! Just because ones sexual preference is different than other people doesn't mean they should be bullied to the point of suicide! Bullying is bad, but bullying against gays is even worse. Just because being gay WAS supposedly a "sin", doesn't mean that they can't have as good a life as everyone else. Thank you Rise Against, for calling attention to this major flaw in America.

I find this is of course raising awareness to the suicides that took place due to the students being bullied for their sexuality but also it touches on the intolerance of other students, maybe even just general people; how they couldn't accept that the students (September's children) had a sexuality that differs from there's so they decided when something doesn't seem right, they should poke it with a stick which is connected to the line-"from a nation under god, I feel its love like a cattle prod". This pushes the students to the edge where they killed themselves, because of the way they chose to lead their lives.
Thanks rise against for another amazing song. -
This song was inspired by the epidemic of gay teen suicides in September of 2010. I looked up information on all of the names after hearing this song, all plus a few more committed suicide in the month of September alone. Billy Lucas September 9, Cody Barker September 13, Seth Walsh September 19, Tyler Clementi September 22, Asher Brown September 23, Harrison Chase Brown September 25, Raymond Chase September 29, Felix Sacco September 30, Caleb Nolt September 30. RIP. However, despite what it written on multiple articles on Harrison I have also seen many comments claiming he wasn't gay and was even in an 8 month relationship with his girlfriend at the time. Either way, these stories are all heartbreaking and I mourn for them and their families. I have a few friends that are gay and they have mentioned a church group that went around to their schools and just bashed gays and protested against them. Adults did this at a high school! People can be so heartless. People like this have lead to 33 suicides in 2010 directly related to bullying, and 1 death for someone getting in the way of a bully's bullet and his younger brother. I really respect the fact that Rise Against can see what an effect bullies can have, and that they stand up for what is right.

i used to make fun of a kid for being gay. i heard this song and really listened to it a couple times and now instead of bullying i stand up for the kid when people try to make fun of him. Rise against stands up for what they believe in which is another thing that makes them amazing.

this song is a call to action for gay rights. rise against is extremely liberal in their views and express it in their music. when they say "this life chose me, im not lost in sin," they are saying these kids and other gays didnt choose to be this way or how they are and that they cannot help it. they are ridiculing society for the norms it has placed upon its people and questions who will stand up for them? many of the lyrics refer to tyler clementi who committed suicide after being filmed by his roomate doing things with another boy. "18 years pushed to the ledge..." and his reference in the end of the song. they also question the existence of any god, which i believe is a grest question. they want to know if a god created us equal, then why are gays demoralized and forced to feel sub-human? at the very end of the song, they say "i plan to go on living" and saying that the are proud of who they are (homosexuals). lastly i would like to say they are ridiculing the values of america when they say "a nation under god.." if we were a free and loving nation then why would many of our citizens and people bully these poor people? if we were a leading country we would set the proper standard when in reality we are clearly being hateful and spiteful pricks. its a clear song in its meaning and intent; it supports gay rights and is a call for action to the world to step up and demand for it.

The song to me,is about standing up for others for those who were not able to stand up for themselves, and also to stop bullying. The song isnt just about being bullied for being gay but being bullied. Each verse seems to be for each child and some of there own story in each part.
R.I.P to all of them. -
I don't think that all the kids mentioned in this song who commited suicide were actually gay, but I think that they were all bullied because people thought they might have been gay.
I can sympathise for these kids since I was bullied because people thought I may have been gay when I was in grade 8, and it was a horrible experience. I'm not gay, but for a long time after that experience I constantly doubted myself and wondered if they were right, and it really did a number on my self-confidence for several years.
Needless to say, this is my favourite song on the album. These bullying s NEED to stop. -
