There's a fracture in the color bar,
In the backseat of a parked car,
By the liquor store where the streetlight.

In the same town, there's the same...

Jon marvels at the fact that gravity is the force of attraction that pulls everything together. Ironically that's not what happens to everyone socially. Socially we fall apart. We segregate, divide, pick-and-choose, deconstruct.

What's wrong here? Why isn't gravity working? Why is the colored person in the first verse put in the back seat? Why's the poor girl who's stuck on the side of the freeway without anyone? Or the man at the pentagon who ends up on FRONT PAGE NEWS for committing suicide because he was put a side by everyone else.

We've got to learn a little from gravity.

"Oh! Gravity, why can't we seem to keep it together?"

Gravity is known for holding things down and keeping things together. Therefore, Jon (the lead singer) is seeking advice on keeping things together from gravity. Gravity may symbolize God.

Gumby above was spot on. The song ends with "oh gravity why can't we seem to pull it together..." meaning the problem will always stay there, which it will becuase that is the natuer of our humanity...sadly :(
