Switchfoot - Souvenirs Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Souvenirs Lyrics
-
This song always reminds me of my sister, who died at age 33 of cancer. I have to listen to it sparingly because it almost always makes me glassy eyed. In my mind, there is no way that this isn't about celebrating someone's life after passing. The lyric, "Can you hear me?" With the ethereal instrumentation makes this clear. I would love to know the story behind it, but I can understand if they (especially Jon) want to keep it private.

To me this song is about a love one passing and when you look back in all your memories and everything you have left of them are your souvenirs. And where it says “ We were so young we had no fears” it’s about how when you’re younger you’re just living and don’t realize how limited time is. No fears about anything. I recently lost a loved one and to me this is what the song is.

I think this song is about old friends (or any past relationship) who grow apart and move on with their lives. But they still have fond memories (or souvenirs- treasured reminders of past good times) of their time together. We never lose those. Even though life continues to happen and progress. Nothing lasts forever and I think this song is a very nostalgic, poignant reminder of that.
