Tears For Fears: Break It Down Again Meaning
Song Released: 1993
Break It Down Again Lyrics
Break it down again
So those are my dreams
And these are my eyes
Stand tall like a man
Head strong like a horse
When it's all mixed up
Better break it down
In the world of secrets
In the world of sound
It's in the way...

When this song came out I was in my mid-30s and it actually helped me out of a major slump and even depression at that time. I felt motionless, sad, even suffocating to a point and couldn't understand why. There were a lot going on in my personal and family life, both good and bad, but I still couldn't fully understand how I felt and so could not move forward. But when I heard the part of the song that says "Break it down again...so these are my dreams...and these are my eyes, stand tall like a man, headstrong like a horse, when it's all mixed up, better break it down..." what I interpreted from it was that, to get through life, through every day, through every moment, especially when life may seem overwhelming and suffocating and paralyzing, you need to SEPARATE the things that are going on in your life as well as things you want to ACHIEVE, that is, break down your dreams, your plans, your actual vs imagined problems, etcetera. Once I did that, I no longer felt paralyzed or unable to breathe. When "life" is weighing down on you it;s probably because all your "stuff", both good and bad,' are mixed up in your mind. Once you break it down, it's all much easier to deal with and resolve or achieve.

I’ve seen a couple of interpretations out there, the most popular being that it’s about Curt’s having left the band. I can see that, but it spoke to me on a much deeper level the more I listened to it. That happens, though. People tend to personalize song meanings. I almost hated to look up the meaning of the song because I didn’t want to ruin what it means to me, which is, in a metaphysical nutshell, shattering the illusion.
