The Antlers: Kettering Meaning
Kettering Lyrics
That first minute we met
The unpayable debt
That I owed you
Because you'd been abused
By the bone that refused you
And you hired me
To make up for that
And walking in that room
When you had tubes in your arms
Those...

the rest of these are really literal, and kind of only looking at the lyrics at face value. I think there is a lot of metaphorical stuff going on. To me this is an internal conflict. A struggle to move on, and a battle with one's old self, unable to let go. The old self being represented by the patient in the song, and the new self by the narrator.

I volunteer for hospice I'm your angel from death who lets you go to that inevitable journey. You will be loved for the short time I'll have you. Gone faces will remain etched in my memory only knowing your last thing to happen in your life.....

I think this song is about a hospice-hence the name of the album- who's girlfriend is in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant that failed (see: abused by the bone that refused you...) and is using him to feel better about her life and situation. (see: you hired me to make up for that). The sad part is he really loves her. We see this throughout the whole song as he refuses to leave her and feeling like he owes her. He says "I didn't believe them when they called you a hurricane thunderclap." Basically she is terminal (going to die) and he doesn't want to believe it.

i think its about a doctor who fell in love with a patient and everyone thought she was going to die.. The doctor took care of her.. in the end, she ends up dying but went to heaven
