The Killers: Mr Brightside Meaning
Song Released: 2003
Mr Brightside Lyrics
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a...

One of the people on the band wrote this song about Brandon Flowers's ex-girlfriend who cheated on him, I know that for a fact!
-
If the cure wrote this song what is the version by them called?
-
Moulin Rouge!

I think this song is about a guy who really likes this girl, but he's too shy to tell her, and when he finally "comes out of his cage", she's already with another guy. I think the rest of the song is that the girl is still friends with him, and all he can do is just imagine what is going on between the girl and this new guy.
-
I didn't really think it was about what actually happened, but rather the song writer's imagination running away with him. I found the previous interpretations too literal, and prefer to think of 'the cage' as an emotional restraint rather than physical. The most important part for me was the line 'and it's all in my head', which I think signifys imagination. I thought it was about jealousy - the thought of his girlfriend being with another man. Eventhough this doesn't explain the title, It is just the feeling I get when I listen to the song. Don't forget that songs don't have to make complete sense - it's the gist that's important, and it can have different meanings to different people. (But it would be interesting to know what the song writer intended!)
-
This song is about a guy who is in love with a girl who has kissed him, but now she is with someone else, he then kills either the boyfriend or both. He is now in jail.
Whether or not it is Jenny from the previous song, or not, is debatable..
I think that it probably is, but nevertheless i'll explain below -
I'm coming out of my cage (Jail)
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all (in jail for 'wanting it all')
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss (when he fell in love with her)
Now I’m falling asleep (dreaming - starts to tell the story of what happened)
And she’s calling a cab (for him that night, presumably)
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag (the girl and her lover)
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head (the memory as he tells us the story)
but she’s touching his—chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go (hold me back, i'm going to kill him/them)
I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control (stopping the situation with murder)
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea (he was a good person before this)
Swimming through sick lullabies (remembering the story in his dream)
Choking on your alibis (possibly strangled them/him?)
But it’s just the price I pay (jail time)
Destiny is calling me (to kill them/him)
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside -
This is complete shit of course but to me it sounds as if his girlfriend is a prostitute and by wanting it all he wants the money but also a pure girlfriend...
but yeah some people comments about friends and cheating also sound right... wonder what the killers have to say bout it... -
The Cure DID NOT write this song. I have no clue where you heard that but it's false. This song was written even before there was a full band. Anyways it's obvious what this songs about. Jealousy. It's part of the tri-murder. The other two are Jenny and the unreleased "A Ballad of Michael Valentine."

I believe that these lyrics mean that the the male singer has a girlfried who has cheated on him with another male friend. He knows this and is able to watch it. Or possibly something along those lines.

This is what I think it means:
I think Mr. Brightside is like the explantion of Jenny Was a Friend of Mine (the song before Mr.Brightside on the cd)
In Jenny it's about a guy who kills his girlfriend or maybe his best friend and then then the cops get him and question him after that he has to go to jail.
Mr. Brightside starts with I'm coming out of my cage, so I think that now he's out of jail and he sees the whole thing before him.
So he starts with telling about that he was doing fine with her but then she gets more distant of him because he is becoming arrogant ("because I want It all") So he sees her kissing someone else and then he asks himself how it could end up like this but he just doesn't want to admit that things are falling apart between them. Then he sees the girl leaving with the other guy and he is starting to get really jealous. Now he just pretends he didn't see anything and then the next time he sees her (jenny lyrics), they have a fight because of what he saw and she gets angry and the jealousy comes up again and he kills her.
I hope this helped you -
