The Killers: This River Is Wild Meaning
This River Is Wild Lyrics
On the beautiful ground
I heard a story from the man in red
He said the leaves are falling down
Such a beautiful sound
Son, I think you better go ahead
But you always hold your head up high
Cause it's a long, long, long...
-
Not sure but its probably about drugs - the man in red the drug dealer, synonymous with the devil possibly - spinning world / wild river referring to coke or speed. 'the current letting go', relating to the sensation of drugs. 'shake a little' referring to the side effects of drugs and the isolation of not getting along with anybody when going through withdrawal ('I never did get along with anybody else')
'now go and show them that the world stayed round but its a long long long way down' could be relating to the recovery, in order to make sense of the world and that it is 'staying round', in order to do this they must let go of the high (you always hold your head up high), and accept the down. 'God speed you boy' - pretty self explanatory other name for speed, 'now Adam's taking bombs' i'm not taking in the literal sense but 'bombs' as in drugs. 'with the hippie in the park', meaning drugs in corners, 'trying to get some of that little girl play', waiting for the kick to take hold. 'listen to the sound of the world, but watch it turn' the increased senses, supernatural side effects, spinning world caused by drugs. 'making sure the merry still goes round' meaning drugs again, as in the dealing of drugs 'merry' nick name for a few I imagine, meaning the cycle of drugs will always continue. -
I think he's trying to say something to those religious people who claim the end of the world is near with every catastrophe we see, he's more optimist about this fact
-
This song is clearly about a man who made mistakes when he was younger, and so he wants to help a boy who still has his youth to avoid the same mistakes. "This River Is Wild" literally translates into, this life is filled with it's ups and downs and that is what makes it wild.
