The Pogues: A Rainy Night in SoHo Meaning
A Rainy Night in SoHo Lyrics
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways.
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into...

In a romantic mood I think this a love song. A long life, well lived with someone you love to share it with is the hope for many of us.
In a darker mood I think the ginger lady is whiskey and that this has been the singers (maybe Shane’s) constant companion through life’s ups and downs it has been the shelter on many rainy nights and in many measures. This makes me a little melancholy.
However I was at a gig where Shane dedicated the song to all the romantics in the audience so I am going to choose to think he meant lovers and not drunks - of which I have been both.
