Third Eye Lyrics

(Intro by comedian Bill Hicks)

Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide and comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.
On my back and tumbling
down that hole and back again
rising up and...

The song is about taking in to your own view of reality. The freedom of it disregarding the governments view of it. Their own view of "comfort and order," It illustrates the state ones mindstate is in when they discover the path to what their own reality is. The natural way, its like a feeling of euphoria and freedom breaking away from regulations of others. like your mind urges to be used as your own meaning of reality, but struggles to get there b/c of the 'order of a normal society' the government created.

Check it out, 13:47 is the length of the song. This page says something about a helix. Maybe like the song Lateralus there is something hidden within the numbers...

It sounds like the entire first part of the song is meant to sound like a hallucination, especially when you turn it up really loud and can hear all the little sounds and noises in the background. I figured the song is about how drugs prevent you from seeing the world for how it really is, and the only way to "pry open your third eye" is to quit the drugs.

this song is about using drugs and such to pry open up your "3rd eye" and see whats really going on in the world and how everythign really is, and appreciate everything and look at it differently. After using many hallucinogens myself and listening to thsi song this song makes total sense. My favorite

This song could have to do with any of these meanings and just like the name "Tool" they are a device used in obtaining something what ever that may be. listen to it love it and feel how you want about it. MJK has his own view about it but it doesn't have to be the same as yours.

Whoever you were that you mentioned carlos, you are a fucking genious. Third eye means an altered state of mind, seeing all things from a different perspectave. Moving the assemblage point perhaps?

Ok everyone here is thinking to much. Tool itself is a feeling I don't listen to Tool... I let it run through me.

Now a third eye could be 1 of many things but the way I see it, is that we as people are trying to grab a new perspective on life thus looking upon things with our third eye.

I don't think that this songs has anything to do with drug addictions, experiences, etc. I'd rather believe that this song is about maynards father. It's saying that his father never thought much of him before, until he became famous. Now his father is saying, "hey look! That's my son..." and Maynard is saying, "oh great. But where were you then?"

"so good to see you. I've missed you so much. So glad it's over. I've missed you so much. Came out to watch you play. Why are you running?"
i think this is what maynards father is saying to him. If you think about it this way, it pretty much speaks for itself.

"shrouding all the ground around me. Is this holy crow above me."
crow is refering to his father (above me). Holy is refering to the goodness his father is trying to express to cover up (shrouding) the things he did in the past (ground around me).

"I stick my hand into his shadow to pull the pieces from the sand. Which I attempt to reassemble to see just who I might have been. I do not recognize the vessel, but the eyes seem so familiar."
maynard tries to recall the 'black holes' in his memory of him and his father, though he can't. Nor will he accept him now that he wants to be there just because he is famous.

"so good to see you once again. I thought that you were hiding. And you thought that I had run away."
this is Maynard talking to his father in response to what he told him.

    That's what I think...

This song is about drug addiction. Its about a dude hooked on some kind of drug, Maybe Ex, probably not, but the bright blue face reminds me of a kind of Ex pill. Anyway, this dude is chasing the effect of the drug trying to get that first effect that will never happen. Hes trying to pry open his third eye instead of just open it. Yeah, I think this song is about drug chasing, Its a lot like Rosetta Stoned on 10,000 days, which is obviously about a bad LSD trip.

its an O.B.E.(out of body experience) he is talking about this experience on the other plain. This is done while "prying open his third eye."

After reading the interpretation of "jimmy" I'm beginning to think that this song is about finding yourself (in MJK's case himself). Hear me out now.... "a child's rhyme stuck in my head, it say's that life is but a dream... I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along" Going back to himself as a child, before his mother's sickness, when the world seemed, for lack of a better word, "perfect". "So glad to see you once again, I thought that you were hiding from me, and you thought that I had run away, chasing the tail of Dogma (smoke and reason)" Using drugs, hallucenogens mainly, to find yourself and open your Third Eye. When I used, even if I was with people, I was by myself trying to find myself, in those moments my mind was spun into an accelerated pace of pulling memories together and trying to piece myself back together with a better understanding of myself. "Shrouding all the ground around me, is this holy crow above, darkest holes within a memory, as blue as our new second sun, I stick my hand into the shadow, to pull the pieces from the sand, which I attempt to reassemble, to see just who I might have been." MJK might be saying here that he would like to see what would have happened if his mother never had her stroke, would he have turned out differently? "I do not recognize the vessel, but the eyes seem so familiar, like phospherescent desert buttons, to see just who I might have been." His own eyes remind him of himself, how did he get there though, through drugs, desert buttons are an alternate term for peyote. I don't believe that this song is not just about drugs, but using drugs to find yourself, to enlighten yourself.... Similiar to Buddhists. They use other ways to enlighten themselves but some paths still lead to the same end.

What I got out of this song was a story about a guy who, while on drugs, met an "interesting character". (Dreaming of that face again...)

He keeps turning to this drug to try to see this person again but he keeps running away. (came out to watch you play...) Another opinion of mine is that the person running away is leading him on, so that he keeps doing the drugs to pry open his third eye.

I may have just wasted your time with this interpretation, but oh well. Thats what I got out of the song.

    Its quite simple!
This song is about opening your third eye
    (The pineal gland)
when Maynard dreams about that face again; Bright blue and shimmering he refers to his ideal self, free from rules, regulations, boundaries or body

    Think for yourself
    Question authority

    Throughout human history,
as our species has faced the frightening,
terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are,
or where we aregoing in this ocean of chaos,
it has been the authorities, the political,
    the religious, the educational authorities
    who attempted to comfort us
by giving us order, rules, regulations,
informing, forming in our minds their
    view of reality.
To think for yourself you must question authority
and learn how to put yourself
    in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness;
    chaotic, confused,
    vulnerability to inform yourself.

    Think for yourself.
    Question authority.
    more interpretation I can,t give
    open your third eye !

    see ya
