Walk On Lyrics

And love, it's not the easy thing
The only baggage, that you can bring
Not the easy thing, the only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long...

The song is dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, who at the time this song was recorded was a political prisoner in Burma (she is now free and a leader of that government).
I always thought Bono meant the words "walk on" as "keep going!...keep pushing ahead!". A vote of confidence, and his encouragement, for someone who was risking her life to bring democracy to her country (though her story and situation is/was far more complex).
Great lyrics and vocals. Though perhaps a bit overproduced in the studio.

I have really struggled with"And love
    Is not the easy thing
    The only baggage
    That you can bring
And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind" but now I see that it is so simple(I think I was trying too hard)-Love-you take it wherever you go, you can't leave it behind like you can a suitcase-why didn't I see that before?-wanted to insert picture of suitcase with heart on it but couldn't

I always thought that the song meant to move pass the hardships you may have gone through. Walking on and looking forward to a life that can mean so much more and to not let your hardships bring you down. Moving on is better to start a life you feel is worth living. I know from my own experience that when I walked on I have become who I am and didn't let anyone else decide who I was. No one can actually tell you who you are or what your personality is unless you let them. You alone should be the one to shape your life and not others (hardships) bring you down. I feel that this is the message the song is telling us.
