A reflection back to childhood...
'Half a mile from the county fair, and the rain came pouring down, me and Billy standin' thee with a silver half a crown'
....two young lads heading for the county fair... About fifty cents between them for a treat. Starts raining, and they're getting wet, but, it doesn't bother them. They just seek a little shelter in the lee of a fence to wait it out, they're happy, stoked, in fact. ...they just don't want it to rain all day. ... after all, they're going to the fair, and then fishin'.... As the day progresses, they get dry as the sun shines down on them, and they thumb a ride to the creek where they were going fishin'. There's a swimmin' hole there, and being boys, they jump right in with no thoughts but happy joyful ones. As their outing nears it's end, and they're walking home, they sing a song, and meet their neighbor, who makes moonshine. They each have a little, and go on their way.... Stoned and high on the simple joys of life.
The reference to 'jelly roll' could be a nod to the Bluesman Jelly Roll Morton.... Who expressed such simple joys in his music. Or just to the simple pleasure of a jelly roll....
'It stoned me' as it is repeated throughout the song is drawing a paralell between inner happines, an inner 'high' of one's spirit, ......and life's often overlooked joys in the simplest things. As well the song expresses the joy in letting lifes little inconveniances, like getting wet in the rain, just slide off one's back...... Focusing instead on life's little treats... A trip to the fair and fishing with your friend.. A cool drink of water from a clear mountain stream.... A ride in the back of a pickup...
Truly a masterful work by Van Morrison....
