Wheatus: A Little Respect Meaning
A Little Respect Lyrics
Oh baby refrain from breaking my heart
I'm so in love with you
I'll be forever blue
That you give me no reason, you know you're making me work so hard
That you give me no . . ....
-
I like both this and the original Erasure's version.
This song first became poignant to me when I had a really hard time getting a first date with a certain girl.
I would contact her and set up a date. The first time I was excited to hang out with her. Then when it came closer to the time that we were to hang out, she told me she was going to a birthday party for a little bit and would call me after to hang out. After hours of waiting she texted me with a pathetic apology and said lets try next week.
I kept my cool and stayed in contact and a week later set up another time to hang out after she got off work. Again I was excited to hang out. She was to call me when she was off work so we could meet up. I waited and waited, tried to contact her with no response. Then a few hours later, she replied with another pathetic apology. Merely saying she was tired and that we should try next week.
After this I was really frustrated. Then I ran into this song and it seemed to express my feelings.
The lyrics "I tried to discover, a little something to make we sweeter," reflected how I was evaluating myself, and finding things I could improve to be more desirable to girls.
"You're making me work so hard." These words expressed exactly how I felt. Why do you make me work so hard, just to get a first date out of you.
And finally, "Please, give me a little respect." Wow, couldn't have said it better myself. I just kept thinking, you know, I've put some good effort into setting up a time for us to hang out, and my time is valuable to me. So for you to just blow me off, is disrespectful. All I've been is a gentleman, and I couldn't bring myself to flake out on a date.
