Zedd: Clarity Meaning
Song Released: 2013
Featuring: Foxx
Clarity Lyrics
Fight fear for the selfish pain it was worth it every time
Hold still right before we crash, ‘cause we both know how this ends
A clock ticks 'till it breaks your glass and I drown in...
-
My ex said this was our song and i asked if that was a good thing and she said yes it is and smiled so i take it as a song about two people who have been through the same struggles in life. they want to be together but they dont want to get hurt so they just stay close to eachother and maybe find there way back to each other

I relate to this song, because I fell in love with someone. We were close friends, it seemed like more sometimes, but we never got together. I found out this person had a problem, and it got to the point where i hardly ever saw them anymore. I try to let go, but I still love them, even though they aren't good for me. But they honestly was one of the best people I ever had in my life, and I still miss him, after a year of being heartbroken...

I was in college and had just broken up with my boyfriend of 8 months when this song came out. I was heartbroken and regretted breaking up more than anything I would have imagined. Two weeks later I learned he had a new boyfriend. It happened to be the guy he cheated on me with. I was obsessed and desperate for any type of communication from him. It would make my heart race and give me mental clarity and peace for just a moment. I was depressed all summer long and I would play this song over and over as I slowly healed and got over the love of my life that I knew I would never call mine again.

I'm pretty sure this song is a personification of an addiction to smoking methamphetamine, and here is a line-by-line explanation of why:
"Hot dive into frozen waves"
would be about heating crystals until they melt in order to inhale the vapors
"where the path comes back to life"
could still refer to the melted crystals flowing around, or to the repetitive feeding of the familiar path of addiction to get a feeling similar to a young love that has been lost/dead
"Fight fear for the selfish pain, it was worth it every time"
meaning that they are trying to cope with a fear of withdrawing/coming down, especially since being higher means a worse come-down, but trying to get as high as possible anyway
"Hold still right before we crash 'cause we both know how this ends"
When a meth addict runs out of the drug after obsessing with it and tweeking they tend to get lethargic and unenthusiastic, but they generally understand that they have to come down eventually. So, when they know the end of the high is approaching (usually due to a lack of sleep/drugs/money) they will often lay still and defeated/depressed.
"A clock ticks 'till it breaks your glass and I drown in you again"
means time being high is constantly counting forward, until the glass used to vaporize the drug breaks from heating with a butane torch and any melted drugs inside spill onto the user
"Cause you are the piece of me I wish I didn't need"
refers to the user wanting to stop, but addiction has already taken hold
"Chasing relentlessly, still fight and I don't know why"
refers to the user's constant struggle to find/obtain more drugs to avoid withdrawing
"If our love is tragedy, why are you my remedy?"
means if this is so horrible, why does it make me feel better?
"If our love's insanity, why are you my clarity?"
If this is so crazy/pointless to try to stay high forever, then why is it the one thing I'm so sure about wanting?
"Walk on through a red parade and refuse to make amends"
refers to the full grip of addiction and refusing to fix the problem
"It cuts deep through our ground and makes us forget all common sense"
refers to the quick erosion of the addict's moral grounding, leading to them doing things they would never have done before drugs
"Don't speak as I try to leave 'cause we both know what we'll choose"
There are no words that could ever seem more important than the drug of choice for some addicts, and overcoming the addiction seems hopeless
"If you pull and I push too deep then I'll fall right back to you"
Even if an addict does manage to get clean, the danger of relapsing and falling into old habits will always be there. It can be all too easy to be pushed back into old patterns of addiction if the addict lets themselves get pulled into thinking they can just go back for one more high.
This song has many layers and could be about any addicting yet unhealthy/painful relationship, but the word choices seem to point towards a personified relationship with the writer's addiction to meth. -

only an addict would say this song is about drugs , lol, cause it is, cause we know that feeling. but others will of course see it as a relationship. we personify our addiction. its a messed up thing. it could be both things.

For me, and my girlfriend who passed away November 19th, 2015...it was our song...
We had a lot of ups and downs. She broke my heart many times, and yet no matter how 'insane' it was for us to stay together, we couldnt stay apart.
I am a DJ/Producer, and the moment i played Clarity in a mix for her, it became our relationship theme song.
It wasnt till she washed ashore after falling into Lake Michigan one night and was found the next morning that the lyrics really hit me...
"High dive into frozen waves" - She was washed off the dock by the high freezing waves...
"A clock ticks 'til it breaks your glass and I drown in you again" - She drown at around midnight, a time we always would spend thinking of each other whenever we were apart.
"Walk on through a red parade and refuse to make amends" - the weekend prior we argued and for the first time in 2yrs, she apologized first, and i, knowing i normally do and should, refused to say i was sorry.
"It cuts deep through our ground and makes us forget all common sense" - due to the hurt i was feeling at my core, i knew i shouldve apologized but ignored that.
"Don't speak as I try to leave 'cause we both know what we'll choose
If you pull then I'll push too deep and I'll fall right back to you" - the night she died i was going to text her, but knew if i did that night id give in and i wasnt ready to forgive her yet.
"If our love is tragedy, why are you my remedy?" - as bad as it was, she was the only one who could take away my pain.
"If our love's insanity, why are you my clarity?" - She would say i was crazy for staying with her and she was crazy for hurting me, and id say i was crazy for trusting her but id be stupid to leave her.
And while yes, the pain of what happened in our relationship cant be excused... in the end... the clarity i had that somethings, really are small in comparison and when you wake up to seeing your girlfriends face on every news channel.... it puts things in perspective.
Thats what i got from the song.
She will always be with me, in my heart. And that song and my tattoo in hebrew that says "Clarity" that i got a few days after she passed will always remind me to put life in perspective, because you never know when it will end! -
While my initial interpretation was that it was about addiction or possibly a failed love affair. If you watch the video, there are some subtle hints that it could in fact be about the loss of a child or pregnancy.
"Walk on through a red parade and refuse to make amends. It cuts deep through our ground and makes us forget all common sense"
This part in the video coincides with some imagery of merging of cells/possibly creating new life.
Maybe she's saying, even though we shouldn't have been together, the life that came from it is something I'll never let go of, that's why I always return to you or want you back in my life, because we lost this thing that tied us together forever.
Just one interpretation. -
My interpretation
Even though we have so many problems in our relationship, I'm in love with you, and I need you with me always. We keep pushing each other away and telling each other it'll never work out, but if that's so true, then why do we keep coming back to each other? Because we need each other. Because I need you, even though I wish I didn't. Whenever I'm with you, I feel complete. I feel better, and no matter how hard I try, I can't get over you. -
Could have dozens of meanings. Two people who can't be together bc of another person, or an addiction, or mental illness, or terminal illness. Or just one person "talking" to the addiction. Or, yes, talking to God. Except if it were God, why would the love be tragedy? So while it's most likely about a love that must end somehow sometime some way, it could apply to many situations; that's what makes it so deep.

I lean toward the love hate relationship... But ultimately love is stronger..

This can mean anything. Where as I take it even though you sin a lot God always forgives and so because of that you'll start to fall in love with him. ( Read the bible to understand )
"The fight Fear for the selfish pain part it was worth it every time". Is when you sin, you've done it for your own pleasure and not for Jesus Christ. But!
" Clock tics till it break your glass and I Drowned in you again"
when you ask for forgiveness and the Jesus Christ forgives you. You can realize how amazing God is, to take you back after you've sinned and to love you no less, and so you fall for him all over again. -
I thinks they call it "clarity" as in the code name for a drug they are using and can't get over it, or she is saying that he is my drug addiction
