I think in this song there probably each others first loves but it ended that they're still close to each other and know they love each other but it just doesnt work when there together...she probably passed out at someones house or a party and he couldnt just leave her there, so he carried her home to her bed hoping she wouldn't wake up && he could just get out of there before she does but then she wakes up and is surprised to see him && is happy...he realizes he just cant stay && he just wants to tuck her in get her set to a good sleep and leave. Well thats not what he actually wanted to do because as he stares at her tired self he just wishes with all his heart he can be with her again so in his mind hes questioning how it could work but then the chorus kicks him which is him denying her and just realizing he just needs to leave his "reality check" but then it goes back and forth between him loving her and what he wants to do vs. what he "should" do.
