Beck: Tropicalia Meaning
Song Released: 1998
Tropicalia Lyrics
-
I have loved this song since I bought the CD years ago. After taking a cruise (that didn't end up adrift) and being shuffled into ports that look like the theme park version of the Caribbean, this song makes sense: the fake facade that all these port towns show to the tourists and then make them feel as if they saw the "real" Caribbean. I will NEVER take a cruise again. Prefer to rough-guide it. But the song makes me think of the artificiality of tourist destinations when they're sugar coated by glossy ads in magazines and TV commercials that show all the happy people having a good time while ignoring the people who actually live and work in these little islands. The irony of this song, so bouncy and and catchy in tune belies a darker side to the great tropical getaway.
