This song was yes, written when Billy Joel and Elle McPherson broke up. However, the lyrics reflect the loss of love. How love is a healing thing but it can also be broken. How hands can hold a heart. If I talk too much, tell me to listen; if I don't talk enough, ask me to speak up; If you do not love me... say it. But if it were up to me, I would stay. Acknowledging that a relationship is made up of two people with different opinions and choices. Not just one person that only has one view.

This is not about a father and son but a man and woman. Actualy man and girl. He wrote this when breaking up with Elle McPherson. He was 30something and she was 18or19 she was also the real inspiration for uptown girl!
