Banish From Sanctuary Lyrics

In deserts I was preaching
the hand of God was with me
baptized with water and I praised
the one who came behind me
to save us all with the holy ghost
a prophet of the fools
I've been lost

I'm sure you're there wandering around
but do...

I think that main meaning issue of this song is to describe role of John Baptist as one who prepare way for Jesus and subsequently must retreat to background (and be even imprisoned and finally executed) in order let Jesus stand out and perform his great final task. He believes in the hidden soul that this must be like this but within his cell seize him doubts if Jesus is really “chossen one whose coming he announced” as some of Jesus opinions and deeds are incomprehensible and confusing for him (and it indeed must be as Jesus is supposed to be trully anointed one and therefore “greater” than John). But as well he is seized by fear about his next fate as any “ordinary” mortal men in similar situation. Follows famous answers of Jesus to John Baptist emmisars concerning doubts about Jesus chosenness, whose implicitly confirms that Jesus is really chosen one (son of God) determined to perform his way to crucifix and reedem mankind by his blood.

Banish From Sanctuary is off of the album Follow the Blind. This song is based on the life of John the Baptist, a historical preacher and religious figure in Christianity who is famous for Baptisms in the Jordan River. According to the Gospel writer Luke, he is related to Jesus Christ.

Banish From Sanctuary opens with "In deserts I was preaching the hand of God was with me, Baptised with water and I praised", which shows that the song is about John. In the beginning John is mentioning Jesus with "The one who came behind me, To save us all with the Holy Ghost." For the most part, the rest of the song deals with John's thoughts while sitting in a prison cell. He was arrested by Herod Antipas for condemning his marriage. A few lines in the song appear to be directed at Jesus such as "Cause they'll never sleep before they catch you, too." The Gospel writer Matthew relates that the imprisoned John sent messengers to Jesus from prison, so it could deal with that. At the very end of Banish From Sanctuary, John the Baptist says that he hears the hangman coming. While the lyric specifies hangman, John was actually beheaded.
