Bright Eyes: Make War Meaning
Make War Lyrics
like the surface of the moon,
or the land between here and the mountains.
Well it is not these hiding places that have kept us innocent,
but the way you taught me to just let it all go by.
And so we've learned...

I think this song is usually viewed as a farewell song to a shitty girl who did all the damage to the relationship. But there's a few lines that seem to be Conor admitting his own faults. Mostly "retreating into the depths of his despair and blocking her out".
I've been in enough relationships where my depression has been a huge factor in the end and as hard as it is to accept blame for something I couldn't control, in retrospect you see your own flaws as something that you can't blame someone for.
On the other hand it could be a case where a significant other gives up on you which, although understandable, can leave you feeling betrayed like he does in this song

this song is about coming to a realization that you were in a toxic loveless relationship and looking back and feeling angry at the other person, at and at yourself. like most relationships, it started with only seeing the the attractive good side of the other person. initially she blinded the singer with her kindness and likeness, however eventually she changed and was miserable and controlling to him. they break up, he leaves her as he eventually realizes how unhealthy their relationship was. he still has moments where he feels weak and misses her control just a little but he knows he is better off alone, he sees her now manipulating a new love interest and he knows the new guy is headed down the same path he went down. initially thinking she is amazing, however he knows the knew guy will suffer the same toxic relationship fate he did.
