    Proto-existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, in an attempt to marry his despairing rational of existence and his belief in God, wrote; “If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if AT THE BOTTOM OF EVERYTHING there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable, insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?”
    Considering the context and illusions made in this song, I assume this is the origin of the title. The above quote is discussed in Camus 'The Myth of Sisyphus', which focuses on the absurdity of humanities attempts to explain life & was probably an influence on Conor Oberst, especially in this song.
