Bruce Springsteen: Nothing Man Meaning
Nothing Man Lyrics
I never thought I'd live
To read about myself
In my hometown paper
How my brave young life
Was forever changed
In a misty cloud of pink vapor
Darlin' give me your kiss
Only understand
I am the nothing man
Around here...

Since this song is in the album “The Rising” which was inspired by the events of 9/11, his perspective is mostly likely from a first responder at the World Trade Center. When he says, “in a misty cloud of pink vapor” to me, it’s his observation of the planes exploding into the buildings. Anther reference “pearl and silver sitting on my night table” is referring to a nickel plated gun with a Pearl grip handle. To rap this up, it’s about a man whose life changed that day forever, asking people to understand and accept him for who he now is, but is welcoming to anyone who wants to buy him a drink out of gratitude.
