Coldplay: See You Soon Meaning
See You Soon Lyrics
And you never should have, no you never should have,
But dont break your back,
If you ever hear this,
Dont answer that.
In a bullet proof vest,
With the windows all closed,
Ill be doing my best,
Ill see you...

#1 top rated interpretation:I was a bit surprised that no one came up with my interpretation of this song, so I have to post it here. ;) In my opinion its very important to consider not only the song text but also how it is performed.
"See you soon" is not only the title but the key to interpretation. The "See you soon" Martin sings is not a hopefull, trustfull "See you soon". Its a "See you soon" as we are saying it to friends or our family again and again without really meaning it.
We might have friends or family members with real problems who "lost their trust". We give some good advices ("No, you never should have", "Don't brak your back") but we are not trying to really get to the core of problems with them ("Don't answer that"). We are staying in our life, safe with our "bullet proof wests" and leave the windows closed.
We we tell them that we will do our bests for them, but in the next moment we leave and let them alone with their troubles. We keep the distance, watch their lives in a "telescope lense", even so they would need "real" friends ("when all you want is friends").
We are surprised that they lost their trust ("oh, you lost your trust?", but superficial words from "outside" ("no, don't loose your trust") are simply not enough ("no, you lost your trust").
At the end "See you soon" is in my opinion a criticism of shallowness in our social behavior and the help of our friends when they really need us. -

#2 top rated interpretation:Ye well I think this song is about being there for someone no matter what or how they feel about you. It's basically a reassurance that the guy will be there trying his best at whatever he can do for the girl. But he's also frustrated at how little he can do.
So you lost your trust And you never should have
No,you never should have
But don't break your back
If you ever see this
But don't answer that
In a bullet proof vest
With the windows all closed
I'll be doing my best
I'll see you soon
In a telescope lens
And when all you want is friends
I'll see you soon
So they came for you
They came snapping at your heels
They come snapping at your heels
But don't break your back
If you ever hear this
But don't answer that
In a bullet proof vest
With the windows all closed
I'll be doing my best
I'll see you soon
In a telescope lens
And when all you want is friends
I'll see you soon
And oh,
And oh, you lost your trust
And oh, you lost your trust
No, don't lose your trust
No, you lost your trust
1. She lost faith in him but he knows how much he'd do for her and so it was a mistake.
2. I don't know about this one there could be a few meanings but I'm guessing its a metaphor "if you ever hear this" If she acknowledges his love but " don't answer that" doesn't show nything back. And he's saying not to make an effort or worry over it.
3. Well I guess this could have different meanings but what I think of it as is maybe a bit alternative.
He just wants to throw himself in the line of fire for her but he's in a house that nothing can get in and he's protected so much and has so little to fight that she'll never realise how much he loves her...but he'll be doing his best. "I'll see you soon" I'm not to sure about but I think its just hopeful. It's sort of reluctant as well as if he's said it before but he knows it won't be true.
4. He's always there looking out for her from far off, (in a telescope lens) being protective and he'll be there for her as whatever she needs- " friends" .
5. possibly the people that have taken her from him, the new people she hangs around with ( people in his opinion lesser than her) begin to "snap at her heels" but he'll be there.
So yeh... That's what I think it's about -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think it's about Princess Diana being killed during a chase with the Paparazzi.
"In a bullet proof vest,
With the windows all closed"
she's hiding from the public and scared for her life
"In a telescope lens,
And when all you want is friends"
being photographed from afar by paparazzi when all she wants is closeness and friendship
"So they came for you,
They came snapping at your heels"
the paparazzi chasing her. -
I personally think this is a song about a guy who has tried his best on trying to convince her that he's a good guy and trying to build her trust but does something that makes her lose her trust for him and he is seclusion her self from him because she suspects the samething will happen and he's asking if he will ever be able to become friends...and is sying ill see you soon because I will be doing my best to see you soon...that's what I personally think

I beleive this song is about a long distance friendship that was close to becoming a relationship, but the girl had to leave.
"See you lost your trust and you never should have, you never should have. Don't break your back if you ever see this." This refers to losing your trust that he will wait for you to return, and not to punish yourself if you hear the rest of the song, where Coldplay explain how he would wait.
"In a bullet proof vest, with the windows all closed, I'll be doing my best, I'll see you soon" Refers to how he will protect himself from seeing others while waiting for the her. Doing his best in life, and to protect himself for next time they meet.
"So they came for you, they came snapping at your heels" Refers to his worry that guys will approach the girl he is waiting for, and then it's repeated how he will be waiting for her.
"In a telescope lens" refers to the distance between them whilst still being able to contact each other albeit not in person. "and when all you want is friends" refers to the need of females 'only' being friends in his life because he is waiting for her.
"You lost your trust, you lost your trust,
no don't lose your trust, no don't lost your trust" is his way of questioning and pleading for her not to lose her trust. -
I personally think that this is a song about a man that has to go to war and he is saying see you soon to his loved ones. Esecially the lyrics in a bullet proof vest with the windows all closed. He is telling his family to not loose trust and faith in him and believe that he will make it home soon.

I have a different approach to this song. I think that the guy hurt this girl and he is singing this song to her. He says "See you lost your trust and you never should have, you never should have. Don't break your back if you ever see this." Meaning you lost your trust because of me, and he feels bad for it but dosent want her back, so hes says "don't break your back if you ever see this." Meaning don't over interpret my lyrics, don't over think what i am saying, or blame yourself. He goes on to describe how she has become..closed off "in a bulletproof vest." all you want is friends" saying she can longer open up to people, and limits all relationships to friends. He also says "dont answer that." meaning call me or try to get in contact with me..."ill see you soon." This is more of a goodbye, a sarcastic "ill see you soon." You really have to understand the tone and texture of the song to understand where i am coming from, but that is how i view it.

To me, simply, the song has MANY interpretations, but my original interpretation involves a person literally being in a prison (Windows all closed, in a bullet-proof vest, etc.).
As the song starts, the lines "So you lost your trust, And you never should have, No you never should have," paint a picture, in my opinion, of a parental figure in prison for something he/she may have done, whether intentional or accidental. These lines would be intended to this parent's son/daughter, as would be the whole song's intention. The next lines, "But don't break your back if you ever see this, don't answer that," accurately helps to base this claim, as the person in jail is starting his/her message to his/her son/daughter, telling them that what the parental figure says shouldn't necessarily take a tole on their son's/daughter's emotions. This may possibly be because the strain by the situation of the parental figure being in a jail or prison may have already burdened the son's/daughter's emotions enough. The chorus is, literally, a description of the jail he/she is in, and a cry of love for the child (I'll be doing my best, I'll see you soon). The final lines of the chorus really hit the message on the head in the sense of the song's message. The lines "In a telescope lens, and when all you want is friends, I'll see you soon", illuminates on the child's situation maybe at a school that he goes to and how he's judged based on his parent's status of being imprisoned. The other children might not be friends with this child simply because of how his parent may have made a wrong choice somewhere along the path of his or her life. This claim is justified in the next verse with the lines "So they came for you, they came snapping at your heels, they came snapping at your heels." The second chorus emphasizes the desperation of the parental figure. Finally, as the song ends, the closing lines are the parent's final request to the child to not lose trust in him/her; to never surrender the only thing that the parent feels he/she has left with the child to attach to.
This is my first and foremost interpretation of the song. Though, as I said at the beginning of this post, there can be many different interpretations of this song based on what a listener's emotions are when hearing it. It can be sad, tragic, hopeful, etc., all solely reliant of how the listener is feeling. -
The meaning of this song for me, its exacly what Im suffering right now. I started hearing this song like every day cuz it remand me to my close-best friend from university. Because of financially problems I couldnt complete my semester so I had to went back home (which is in another country) and left my true friend. There comes the meaning of "You lost your trust" Cuz ive lost my trust the person I use to talk everyday the one that I always receive help no matter what. Ive lost faith too on going back again to uni and be with her.
And for the part "I´ll be doing my best" "I´ll see you soon" its exacly what I always tell her when i talk to my friend. That I might probably gonna have the strenght and faith on going seen her back again.
"in a telescope lens when all you want is friends" i guess this part its kind of obvious, from what Im leaving. And It has been hard because she is still my best friend and distance its what separete us. And all I want is being with her, telling and having the trust again of telling things i havent tell anyone except her. "All you want is friends" Thats what really matters in life a frienship or someone you can trust.
"No, you lost your trust
no, don't lose your trust". Then, for this final part its the end of this situation, reality is that I know I wont be able to see her again.

okay , i absolutely LOVE coldplay . every single one of their songs have spoke to me in very different ways each time . to me , "see you soon" is a morbid song . i think its about a friend that committed suicide and this is somewhat his letter goodbye ( both chris and his friend ) . in a bulletprrof vest with the windows all closed , i continued my best , ill see you soon . . those words send chills down my spine . i think he was trying to tell a story and morn at the same time . i could be completely wrong but that's just what the song says to me .

I think this song is about war. I think it is a letter that a soldier writes to his lover. He doesn't know if she's gonna read the letter, because they are far away from each other. He wants her to know that he's still alive, and he's going to survive because he's doing his best. He doesn't want her to lose her trust in him.
"In a bullet proof vest, with the windows all closed, I'll be doing my best, I'll see you soon."
I think that maybe she is one of the enemys, mainly because the "don't answer that" and the "they came snapping at your heels" parts.

Personally, this song to me is about a man who feels betrayed and let down by a close girlfriend. please listen to the song while you read this...
she has turned him down, where he has put his heart on the line, telling her how he feels. She doesn't feel the same.
he still loves her, but it broke his heart to learn that she didn't love him the same way.
he has to be alone to get through the humiliation and rejection. He tries to reassure her that it didn't hurt him as much as it really did.
'they came for you, they came snapping at your heels" an outside influence over her makes her apposed to being with him. gossip about him that makes her not trust him. She assures him it has no influence over her decision not to be with him, though he feels it did.
he doesn't want her to feel guilty (don't break your back), he just needs time to get over her.
the deep, emotionally bound words "i'll see you soon" shows he knows that when they see each other again, it won't be the same, and the pain he still has from the rejection means they will drift apart, as much as they both don't want to.
'you lost your trust' seems to mean so so much in this song. I think there's more to this story than he's shared. Has she lost trust in herself? him? the ability for them to stay friends? the fact that it is left open and unknown is the most beautiful part of the lyrics, because it lets us attach ourselves personally to the words, with our own meaning.
this song is going to mean something different to everyone. I think its supposed to. Its so interesting reading everyones interpretations and seeing the diverse head spaces we were all at when we found our connection to this song. god, music is amazing. -
She wants to be friends he loves her to death. She has to leave him but he'll be watching after her from far away. She is scared to be anything other than friends cause she lost her trust towards humanity: she wears a bullet proof vest and the windows of her heart are closed. He'll see her soon. One of them is leaving.

Maybe it's just me, but I hear something totally different. Don't get me wrong, the song is gorgeous and calm, but I see a completely morbid side to it... which is weird, because I don't see Coldplay as morbid in the slightest, and though I'm random, I don't tend to think this way... weird...
I also have heard two different intros - "So you lost your trust, and you never shared her, no you never shared her" or instead of "shared her" it's "should have"
So you lost your trust, and you never shared her, no you never shared her...
I think it's "should have" in my opinion, but if it really is "shared her", it could mean there's a guy who was betrayed by a girl, he lost his trust and is threatening to kill her. (Weird, right?)
But don't break your back if you ever see this, don't answer that - the guy shouldn't lose his cool, but by now the police have surrounded the location... don't answer the phone.
The police are in bullet proof vests... The windows are all closed. The guy probably knows his fate, and tells the girl he loves that he'll "see you soon"...
Telescope lens can very well mean a sniper rifle, all this guy wanted was for things to be normal, but he'll "see you soon".
So they came for her - bust down the door, but don't freak out - don't answer their questions...
In the song, at about 2:00, you hear the haunting sound of a guitar... could that be a poetic version of an ambulance siren? Police?
By now the deed has probably been done... She lost her trust for good, he was killed and yes it's all very morbid...
I didn't mean to ruin it for anyone, like I said, the song is beautiful and calm... I just don't know why this interpretation hit me the way it did. It was strange for me too... I love Coldplay lol I don't think this is what they meant at all... I guess I'm not just random, but morbidly random... Sorry. -
The song is pretty ambiguous and can be interpreted multiple ways.
I strongly believe it's about a girl who lost her trust in others, she's shut herself out from being with others because she's afraid to get hurt (i.e. bullet proof vest, windows all closed, "lost your trust"). The singer doesn't know why she no longer has faith in love because she never "shared how."
"In a telescope lens, all you want is friends," means in her secluded, self-inflicted world she wants nothing more than platonic relations due to fear and mistrust- emotions produced from past experiences and misdirected at the singer. -
In a bullet proof vest
With the windows all closed
I'll be doing my best
I'll see you soon
I think this song is mainly about someone(a girl) who's very insecure and the person(a guy) who loves her is doing his best to help her, and he's saying that once she sees what's right and becomes more secure, he'll be with her always.
So...yeah... -
I believe the song is what you want it to mean. My boyfriend has been in the war on his six month tour, and I relate the song to him. But you could relate it to any aspect in your life.
Its an amazing song!
