   I think this is about a guy whose girlfriend just broke up with him. He doesn't understand why, trying to analyze what went wrong, looking at it rationally like a scientist. "I was just guessing at numbers and figures, pulling the puzzles apart."

   I read somewhere online that Chris Martin (the lead singer) wrote this song for his brother who is trying to pursue his dreams of becoming a scientist. "Questions of science, science and progress." Chris' success and his brother's being at college keeps them from seeing each other.
   
   "Come tell me you love me, come back and hold me" and he wishes that things were the way they used to be between them. "Take me back to the start". His brother realized that it's quite hard to become a scientist and was close to flunking out of college, "Nobody said it was easy." but ultimately got back into it and became a scientist. Now I hope I don't sound stupid! Anyone agree with my interpretation?

   The Scientist is about neglecting their relationship, and when it finishes, he realises his errors, and instantly wants to go back to it again. "Running in circles, chasing our tails" "come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry"
