I believe the idea for this song is in part taken from Henry David Thoreau's "Walden Pond." The concept seems to me very similar, for example the wooden house. I'm surprised to see this nowhere in anyone's interpretations.

its about a relationship holding someone down. chris sings about what he wants to do but whenever he sings, 'we never change', it refers to the other person, who is holding him back, but he doesnt want to end the relationship because he loves her too much (I wanna live life, and be good to you,)he wants to meet new people (And have friends around/Making more friends would be easy)he wants to be free (I wanna fly, never come down/I wanna live where the sun comes out)but he thinks that the girl in the relationship is right to hold him back when it isnt (Oh and I don't have a show to say/Yes, and I sin every single day/We never change, do we?)and he's always thought that.
its a complex song, but beatiful
