Collective Soul: Shine Meaning
Shine Lyrics
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
What will I find
Lay me on the ground
Fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
What will I find
Oh, heaven let your light...
-
Something about this songs music, lyrics and singing all combined to a heavenly comfort of joy to me I love it because I see it in a positive way ...

I do think this is a spiritual context, but maybe it wasn't written to Ed Roland himself. I just think it is about people in general. So here goes my interpretation...
"Give me a word, give me a sign, show me where to look, tell me what will I find?"- A man has just begun to believe in God, and he is asking God to prove that he is there, and to show the man where to look for him. "Lay me on the ground, fly me in the sky, show me where to go, tell me what will I find,"- The man is asking God to make him an angel when he dies to prove Himself.
(Prechorus)
"Oh, Heaven let your light shine down x4,"- He finally sees that Heaven and God are real and is enjoying the new light.
"Love is in the water, love is in the air, teach me where to go, tell me will love be there?"- The man knows that love is EVERYWHERE, so he asks Him where to go to find the most of that love. "Teach me how to speak, teach me how to share, teach me where to go, tell me will love be there?"- The man was greedy and cruel before he began to believe, so he is asking God to teach him to be better.
(Prechorus)
(Chorus)
Thank you for viewing my interpretation. And since it is the only song I know by Collective Soul, it is my favorite. -
Ed Roland, lead singer and songwriter, is the son of a preacher man. He respects his father greatly, but he also seeks his own understanding of things resulting in some great music and contemplation of all things. Who can deny heaven's light and that love is real? All can relate to a desire to understand life, love, and things to come.

I feel like this song was written to me, by myself in the future. The first verse especially is "Give me a word, give me a sign. Show me where to look, Tell me, What will I find?"
I feel this way because of something profound that happened to me. I have always been interested in astronomy, and in particular, the moon and the planets. I always look at them. This is what "show(ed) me where to look. I did see a sign, a very strong sign. But it wasn't a word. It was numbers. Prime numbers. Prime numbers starting at 2 and continuing in succession to 19 or so. But they weren't bright and flashing, they were subtle. If I hadn't of been so interested in looking at the moon and planets, I would have never seen them.
So this is what I found, if I could only know what it means. All that I can take from it, and in light with the rest of this beautiful song, is that there is more to life than meets the eye. Heaven, perhaps. Afterlife, perhaps. Alternate dimensions and universes, perhaps. Extraterrestrial life, perhaps. All that one can do is live life and enjoy the journey. And, keep an eye out for interesting, if subtle, signs. Ha ha.
