Nemesis Lyrics

Tonight is the night
The empowering wind that draws breath from despise
Roars ‘neath my wings as I soar with the end in sight

Choirs ignite
A swansong for Leda
Deathknells for Troy
Tragedy blooms from one act
I am nemesis

Poured in my...

    Dani Filth:
'In the wake of the September 11 attacks, few people could possibly remain unaware of the rising threat to world peace through concerted acts of terrorism. This song delves into the mind of one such militant and offers the reasoning behind his holy war: the needless loss of loved ones and the desire to avenge their memory against a privileged western enemy. This song seeks not to condone or encourage such retaliation, but to find an explanation. It is my personal favourite track on the album. Sounds like At the Gates meets Judas Priest meets Morbid Angel listening to "Amor e Morte".'

Actually, I just did some research on the line about Leda, and it seems she was the mother of Helen of Troy. Also, play on words to "swan songs" because she was known for the painting Leda and the Swan. Troy, quite obviously stated, Troy, the city. Nemesis is the Goddess of Divine Retribution in the Greek Pantheon, also relating to the lines in which Dani speaks. Nemesis also produced an egg in which Helen and Clytemnestra, Helen's twin, were born. Controversies have been brewed over the subject of Helen being Leda's true daughter or a child of Nemesis, but in this portrayal, it speaks of Helen being stolen away, causing the war to occur, and Nemesis being enraged, and adding to the warfare, as it states near the end of the song. Nemesis was said to be remorseless and vengeful, thus being the Goddess of Revenge. This song is not based on the Iraq War, nor about Dani's daughter, but despite having a main subject to write his music about, I am sure a genius like Filth wouldn't exile all possibilities of such interpretations for any of his songs, especially something as vague as Nemesis. Also, this IS a site for musical interpretation isn't it? It doesn't matter what music is ABOUT, but how you can relate and express yourself through it.

Actually guys I watched an interview with Dani Filth and he sayed it has some references to his daughter but it also has to do with a man who is infected by a demon type creature that worships the moon. This man is then "saved" by a group of priests or villagers (he doesn't make that one clear) who try to nurse him back to health but he slowly transforms into a demon (very original) and becomes obsessed with the moon the villagers shun him and lock him away in a grotto or cave that isn't exposed to the moonlight he escapes and kills and infects the (priests, villagers) that locked him away. And I have no idea how anyone can link that to the war in Iraq.

I think this song is about Iraq War and someone’s daughter got killed by soldiers and he is about to fight against the intruders. There are some sentences that are very direct about it such as:” So strike up the skies/ The diction of thunder/ God-given rites…” and so on… furthermore there is the direct anti-western-world line “…I am the priest of a new disorder/ Whose flag unfurled /Bears a hatred for the western world…”
A further (hidden) sign for that topic is the word “shrike” that is a bit strange and SHRIKE is also an american air-ground missile that uses the radar frequency of a radar station as aim.
That could be a symbol for the american high-tech-war.
Of course there is also a connection between “my ray of moonlight” and dani’s daughter luna but I think a dark-metal band like cradle won't sing lovesongs about the frontmans daughter

I thought it was more to do with terrorism. Obviously Dani draws from the emotion of if it was his own daughter, Luna. The song is called "Nemesis" and the chorus lyric is "Black is my heart, I am nemesis." If it were a love song to his daughter I don't think those lyrics would be appropriate.

This song is about his daughter, of course. Luna Scarlett is his daughter's name. He sings of how he'd kill any bastard that tries to come take her away / kill her.

I swore to slaughter those who stole my ray of moonlight.

Kinda sweet, really. He refers to his daughter as his "ray of moonlight" because her name is Luna (which is Spanish for Moon).
