Daniel Johns: One Day at a Time Meaning
One Day at a Time Lyrics
You must take one day at a time
One day at a time,
You must take one day at a time
People get so lonely
And they just can't go on
They don't know what to do with their lives
Mum used to say just take one day at a...

That is so me. I have so many people around me but still depressed. I think it's the holiday. Just sick of all this God horrible acting.

The phrase "one day at a time" is used a lot in substance abuse programs (AA/NA etc), and is a way to try and help people "stay in the day" (if they can just stay one day sober/clean, then it becomes easier to stay sober/clean the next day, and so on). It is a way to try and get people to live "in the moment", rather than worrying about what may or may not happen in the future. The principle of "one day at a time" can be applied to anything that is very painful - grief, loss of relationship, depression etc; if you can just get through this day, then maybe you can get through the next one. The song also seems to be about loneliness/depression and the feelings of isolation that so many people experience, and I think Daniel is trying to remind us (and possibly himself) that there is a future, and there are new dreams waiting, if you can "last"; hard to say what he means by "last" - is he talking about not using substances, or is he talking about moving through a depressive episode until you get to the other side, and not making the ultimate sacrifice... A beautiful and deeply personal song.

One day at a Time from the Think Positive album by Daniel Johns on itunes This song is about being very alone even though you have lots of people around. You can be very alone and extremely depressed and people who even know you well will not even suspect it.
