Dave Matthews Band: Alligator Pie Meaning
Alligator Pie Lyrics
Waiting for a boat to throw me a line
See my Stella smile
Sitting on the roof eating alligator pie
First day the water rise
Second day the sun is high
Third day Stella cried cause night times dark as a dead man's...

He also stated, when the song came out, that Stella asked him this question specifically "when are you gonna put me in a song?"

Dave doesn't have a sister named Grace. He has a sister named Jane. His sister Anne was murdered. He has a brother Peter.
Please people - you can "assume" what he means in his lyrics all you want - it's going to be different for everyone. But when you are stating incorrect information which is EASILY verifiable, you are just lazy and don't care. -
Ok so Dave has 2 daughters, grace and Stella, let me start with that. Te reference of the song is the lower 9th ward of new Orleans which was the most devastated in Katrina. Thats what the basis of the song is about "floatin in the lower nine," sittin on a roof eatin alligator pie." and the reference to " daddy when you gonna put me in a song" is a reference to his two daughters AND his sister. He mentions grace in a ton of songs referencing back to the early 90s, way, way before his daughters grace an Stella were born. Those old songs are reference to his sister grace, but his daughter, Stella, whos 8 years old thinks its about HER sister grace, and not her deceased aunt. Hence, "daddy when you gonna put me in a song"

In the 2009 europe tour, dave tells how he was sitting with his daughter, stella, and she realized that her sister grace was in a song, and asked dave to put him in one, therefore the lyrics literally tell the story
-
In the song he says "Stella said daddy when you ganna put me in a song" Stella is the name of one of his daughters, so it might've been something she said and he thought was funny.

Alligator pie is a song written about hurricane Katrina since it was written in New Orleans. Also in the beginning of the song the man talking and the dog barking was somebody selling something and his dog kept on barking. It happened every time DMB tried to record it, so it became part of the song
