Dave Matthews Band: Jimi Thing Meaning
Song Released: 1994
Jimi Thing Lyrics
A remedy is what I’m seeking
I take a taste of what’s mellow
Come away to something better
What I want is what I’ve not got
And what I need
Is all around me
Reaching searching never stop
And I’ll say...
If...

#1 top rated interpretation:Sorry, you're way off, it's definitely about drugs, mostly I think this song is about how smoking is taken way too seriously, Dave doesnt care anymore, he'll smoke if he wants to smoke. It makes him feel better, especially since he feels bereaved.
When you're suffering over a loved one, the last thing that's usually on my mind is sex, but I will not hesitate to roll one. At that point, you don't care if people you know don't like you smoking, he convinces himself not to care and lights up. Rapunzel, not that ones aren't about sex, but I just don't think this one is. -

#2 top rated interpretation:I'm thinking that the song is probably a mixture of lot of things, and all you people sit here and argue like you wrote the song, but NONE OF YOU DID. YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING, and your no cooler than anyone else for thinking that you do know what its about..... who knows maybe it's about doing drugs WHILE having sex?

#3 top rated interpretation:Dave Matthews played at your high school so this song is about sex? Yeah, well I guess I missed your logic on that one. But sorry, I don't care if he played at your 4th birthday party, this song is about drugs, it doesn't matter if his drug of choice is heroine, he still smokes pot, I thought most people knew that.
-
What if it is adrenochrome? It is a very popular topic now. Its been around for many a year. Who knows these days. Only Dave can say. What would you say?
-
It HAS to do with Jimi Hendrix or it would not be spelled J I M I —what other “Jimi” is there?? U can interpret that any way u want. But it’s definitely a reference to Jimi Hendrix. Duh

to think this song is about sex is taking the lyrics from face-value..if that. Based upon events happening during this albums era, such as heavy opiate use by Dave, I believe this song is about opiate use. The feeling you get when you have the urge to partake in opiate use and when you actually use them is illustrated flawlessly through the lyrics in the song. "take a taste of what's mellow and come away to something better" this lyric describes how a person views his/her opiate use; whether its true or not the person feels like they are moving on with their lifes with the help of a little numbness

I think everyone has probably gotten it a little right, except for the fetus thing, lol, but then again who knows. That's the beauty of Dave's music. He leaves it kinda loose and vague sometimes so that the listeners can identify with the lyrics in their own way. I'm sure that Dave probably had his own inspiration for the song. But by leaving it not so direct and obvious its kinda Dave's little way of fucking with us. Can't you just imagine him laughing at us all trying to pick this apart? Its art, its music, and its Dave. You are free to do with it as you choose.

You all make me laugh, I am going to go smoke a joint and have some sex...with a condom, of course...safe sex is key.
P.S. It is NOT about a fetus...but I WOULD like to try what you are smoking...have a great day, all, and keep up the good work! Oh, and try and keep the bickering down, no need to get so angry over interpretations...just sit back and relax... -
Better late than never. Look at the album cover insert, or in this case the dvd insert. The band specifically states that a jimmi thing is slang in England for condom. all you pot heads out there - wishful thinking, but really it's not about druge
-
The song references alcohol, marijuana and possibly LSD. The song is about using these things to get over his bereavement or absence of love.
-
I can't stand people who "quote" what "the band said the song is about". First off most of them don't tell you where they read/saw the quote. Second off, it doesn't matter what the songwriter wrote it about. This is the beautiful thing about these kinds of song lyrics/poetry: If you hear it and it reminds you of or relates to some experience you've had or person you know, etc., then that's what the song is about! It's about sex, it's about drugs, it's about being a fetus, it's about being dope sick, it's about your Mom or your brother or YOU. Who cares? Enjoy it fuckers.

Ok i'm not going to get too harsh on the interpretations, but I can't believe anyone on here has not made reference to what a Jimi thing is.... It's a condom. Plane and simple. This is a common term in Europe specifically Britian and british colonies ie' South africa. This just happens to be mentioned in the guitar tab book for Under the table with and interview with the band. I think if you listen to the song and remember a time when you were having sex with a condom and thought "this is good, but it would be so much better if I could just feel it all" than maybe you'll see something different in the song.
In any event if you make this leap you can extrapolate that yes he is singing about sex with a condom, and in some references that he'd like to take it off, and in others that it makes you last longer "i'd like to show you whats inside"
"What I want is what Ive not got" -able to take it off
"And what I need is all around me" -the sex
"If you could keep me floating, Just for a while, Till I get to the end of this tunnel" - self explanitory vaginal reference.
"And I shouldn't care" - Yeah sex is good, even with a condom
"The day is gone I'm on my back, Staring up at the ceiling" More sex referneces
"Reaching searching never stop" -No matter how you slice it you'll never get the feeling you want with it.
Sorry, I'm all for advocating and practicing safe sex, but pretending it's the same is just silly. -
I always thought it stood for condoms.
-
I think it starts out about marijuana/alcohol as his initial remedy for bereavement and then when he "comes away to something better" he is talking about something far less trivial and possibly a light or spirit of love that gives him a far better euphoria than any earthly narcotic. Why else would he call upon jimi to keep him floating til he gets back to jimi? jimi is possibly nomenclature for the source of the love within him.

hi guys, possibly some of the lyrics are about drugs. so what? the guy writes great songs. if you found out one of your favorite artsts were gay, would that take away from his music. i've taken almost every drug you can think of, it gives you something to write about. i say go dave, keep up whatever you're doing

Haha I nearly pissed my pants when reading the fetus interpretation. like honestly, I'm not kidding. I can't believe that you took time to interpret a song and came up with that as your final product. but thank you I'm going to show that to a lot of people because its honestly one of the funniest things I have ever seen. anyways, I think this song is definitely about smoking pot. references everywhere. and to the post saying stoners adopted the song or w/e.. you are extremely ignorant and have probably have some weird grudge against pot smokers. you don't need to be high to appreciate good music. Thanks! xD
