Dave Matthews Band: Two Step Meaning
Song Released: 1996
Two Step Lyrics
With best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just what
I’m seeking
Love, you drive me to distraction
Hey my love do you believe that we
Might last a thousand years
Or more if not for this?
Our flesh and...

Just a little fun fact for some. It is a little hard for me to say "because Dave is religious this song must have religious undertones" seeing as how Dave Matthews is an Agnostic-Athiest. Just throwin that out there.
-
I'm pretty sure this song is about the old testament. It's about Adam and Eve, and original sin, and then the floods and Noah's arc.
"Say my love, I came to you with best intention" (offering the apple). "Do you believe that we might last a thousand years, or more if not for this" (eating the apple).
"We're climbing two by two, to be sure these days continue" -
It definitely has relation to Noah's Arc...many of Dave's songs talk about religion in them...climbing on two by two so these days can continue makes it obvious that he is referring to the animals climbing onto the arc

Every time I listen to this song I get a different view of it. I've never thought about the religious concept of it.. but if that's what your going for okay. but I've always focused on the "celebreate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain". I think that he's saying that we should be happy with our life because however fun it is, its not going to last forever. and I think two by two means that we pick and choose who we want to be with, and spend our lives with and we walk with them for a long time. but, raelly everyone interprets this one differently. listen to it over and over again. you won't get the same meaning twice.

Dave is religious in many of his songs, but that's not the main focus of this song. He says "Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain." He is simply saying that life is to short for things to be taken for granted.( One Sweet World lyrics). We need to enjoy what we have and go with it and have a good time in doing so.

This song is about love, and all you need is love, well in a sense. This song definitely references Noah's Ark when he talks about climbing on two by two to make these days continue. But by this he is also saying that two by two we make these days continue even now, meaning lovers make the world continue. This must be a love song considering he begins the song by saying "I came to you with best intentions, You laid down and gave to me just what I'm seeking." To make this world continue you must climb on two by two, in love.

I agree with the religious interpretation. Also, the lyrics Hey, my love, you came to me like
Wine comes to this mouth
Grown tired of water all the time
You quench my heart and you
Quench my mind.
Noah was a drunk until God placed him on this mission, he then is back with his family and loves his wife. Noah compares his love to his old love (wine). Also, he has grown tired of water all the time....rain for 40 days and 40 nights. I'm not saying I'm right, but it would strengthen the song as a religious song. -
The song has to do with love and its celebration but at the same time he is talking about the convenience of the relationship ("things we cannot change"), stressing on the fact that he cannot leave his lover. There is an element of frustration and perhaps the 'celebration' is ironic.
-
Two step is About Noah's Arc. "Say, my love, I came to you with best intentions You laid down and gave to me just what I'm seeking" Noah is obviously warned about the flood coming and "Climb on two by two to be sure these days continue"the animals and the people climb aboard noah's arc to live and make sure the days continue. Dave is religious and a lot of his songs have to do with God and religion.

I agree...I don't think it's about war- I just think it's about celebrating life and taking it in minute by minute. He's with the person he loves (my love) and he's just trying to enjoy life.
-
I dunno about that because the lyrics are not walking 2 by 2, it's climbing 2 by 2...so that isn't correct.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
