   Demi Lovato lost one of her close friends when she was younger, and I think this song is saying that she feels him watching over her, kind of like a guardian angel. I also believe she's longing for him, because the nightingale represents love and longing in East Indian mythology. She misses him, and needs him to keep her grounded to the world.

   When Demi was younger a good friend of hers past away when he was 13. The lyrics of this song is about her friend who she feels is a angel (nightingale) watching over her. In the song she feels that he is watching over her and asking if it is him.

   I believe that Demi was referring to God or Jesus Christ in this song through the lyrics "I dont know what id do without you, your words are like a whisper cutting through as long as you're with me here tonight I'm good". Saying that she's protected by Gods spirit and the Holy Ghost. Also, "I need a voice to echo, I need a light to take me home, I need a star to follow, I dont know" referring to the star that the wise men had follow which led them to their savior Jesus Christ.

   I think that this song has a similar meaning to Hold My Hand by The Fray. It is a call to someone for protection. "Will you be my nightengale?" and "You can be my sanity, bring me peace, sing me to sleep" is just a hope to have that one person (or thing) than can always bring you happiness. Sometimes life throws difficult obstacles in your path, and everyone needs a shoulder to cry on, or a therapeutic activity to keep them sane. This song is a prayer for that.
