Dream Theater: Beneath the Surface Meaning
Beneath the Surface Lyrics
-
Its about a broken couple who chose to leave from each other by silence. A boy who seemed afraid of arguments kept himself quiet and busy. while a girl nervously thought the same thing in her mind over and over and was trying to find out, but never succeeded. once when both totally lost their good feelings with each other, they were done and left their memory behind silently like it is buried under the deep water.

I believe this song is about having really strong feelings for someone, and believing they may or may someday feel the same for you, hence the line 'You had lead me to believe someday you'd be there for me.'
I think that it is written about wishing you had the guts to tell that one person how you feel, completely clueless that they actually are feeling and thinking the same about you.
But the sad part about this song, is it tells the story of experiencing falling out of love with that person due to time and years passing by and no success. This is mainly shown in the chorus :)
And finally the bridge sings about all the things you would do for that person, but they were always too nervous to do the same.
Its actually quite a sad song. -
Well for those who are familiar with it, i think it is about the myth of orpheus and eurydice. If you look at the myth, a lot of lyrics add up.
