This song was originally written by Mac Davis but popularized by Elvis Presley. It's a narrative of a boy born in the ghetto of Chicago. He grows up, steals and fights, buys a gun and steals a car. Attempting to run he is eventually is shot and killed. At the end another child is born, with the implication that this child will suffer the same fate.
