Evanescence: Oceans Meaning
Oceans Lyrics
But I can't bear the thought of one more day
I think I finally understand what it means to be lost
Can't find the road to lead us out of this
One million miles from where we burned the bridge
Can't...
-
She's talking to herself , her soul , to who she really is and escaping from . Just think about it this way and read the lyrics ; you will see another window opens with a very different view.
-
Don't want to be the one to walk away
But I can't bear the thought of one more day
I think I finally understand what it means to be lost
Clearly she’s saying that she doesn’t want to be the person letting go of the relationship, even though this relation has come to a clear ending. “But I can’t bear the thought of one more day…” The thought of being forced to live with this person and his problems which’s just too much for her to bear, leading her to realize she’s lost when she’s close to him and doesn’t know how to deal with it anymore.
Can't find the road to lead us out of this
A million miles from where we burned the bridge
Can't keep pretending everything's gonna be alright
She’s making it clear that she no longer sees a future with this person and, as a result of this, can’t pull them out of this situation. The second sentence probably refers to their relationship – a bridge – which has come to an end and she increasingly wants distance from. She’s so frustrated with this relationship that she just can’t keep pretending that it’ll all be alright.
With the whole world falling around me
I guess she’s so disappointed with the way things have gotten so far that she feels like the world is falling around her… all the sorrow and suffering caused by her “break-up” with the person mentioned in the song is so overwhelming that she sees life and its beauty as a bunch of woes falling around her.
Cross the oceans in my mind
Find the strength to say goodbye
In the end
You never can wash the blood from your hands
“Cross the oceans in my mind…” in my point of view, means that she’s daring her “beloved” to cross the complexities in her mind, and by complexities I mean all the struggles, wishes and ideologies which every person has within themselves.
“Find the strength to say goodbye…” meaning that the person to whom she’s referring needs to find the strength to “release” him/herself from all the things that he/she is attracted to or that make him/her feel good, even though it hurts. By “things” I mean people, places, attitude, situations…
“In the end you never can wash the blood from your hands…” I believe she’s saying that although all the effort that has been given by the person in order to get through the oceans in her mind and find the strength to get over his frustrations and disappointments for not being able to do like so, this person will never be free from his defeats, feeling forced to deal with the stain left of his blood.
Fallen so far from where we were before
You'll never find what you've been searching for
Something to fill the void and make up for all
Of those missing pieces of you
I think she’s saying that now that they’re apart, both are destined to follow different ways, where the one which he’s about to follow won’t show him what he wants, since along his relationship with her he still didn’t know what he truly wanted, let alone now that he’s without her. The two last sentences of this paragraph might wanna say that he’ll never be able to find the things that could truly complete him and make him feel satisfied with himself.
Like I could only dream to do
I haven’t really gotten the message expressed here... maybe she’s being “ironic” about the fact that she could only dream of being truly happy with this person or that he would, in fact, be able to find himself among all the things he had been searching for. Don’t really know…
And we never learn
So we fall down again
Heaven help me find a way to dream within this nightmare
Love this part of the song! I believe it means that we, humans subject to fail, need to fall over and over again in order to learn stuff (by “stuff” I mean life and its complexities). A good example of this part can be found in the process in which the bird has to fall down from the tree until he finally comes to understand how to do it right. Finally, she’s begging for some relief… the relief of dreaming about the good things in life even knowing that she’s stuck in the awfulness that is life. -
I think it´s about a friendship/relationship thats breaking. The Person wants to break up the friendship/relationship because he/she always was the one who was hurted but he/she has not the "strengh to say goodbye". Maybe she loves the Person too much to break up contact and/or he/she doesn´t want to be the "guilty one" (in the end you never can wash the blood from your hands).

This song reminds me about Macbeth, or Lady Macbeth to be more precise.
"Don't want to be the one to walk away, but I can't bear the thought of one more day."
She didn't want to give up on making her husband king, but she couldn't take the thought of being discovered.
"I think I finally understand what it means to be lost."
Maybe she couldn't make up her mind, should she continue, or just pretend nothing ever happened?
"Can't find the road to leads us out of this, a million miles from where we burned the bridge."
She doesn't know how to get out of the mess she has dragged them into, for she has gone too far to turn back now, the bridge is burned, she cannot cross back over to the other side.
"Can't keep pretending everything's gonna be alright."
She knows that they will get caught eventually, she is trying to convince herself that it is going to be alright, though she knows it won't.
"With the whole world falling around me."
Her plan is falling apart, everything will be revealed, no matter how much she doesn't want it to.
"Cross the oceans in my mind, find the strength to say goodbye."
I'm not too sure, maybe it means that she needs to give up, but she doesn't have the strength to do it for she is too scared of the consequences.
"In the end you never can wash the blood from your hands."
There is a scene in the play in which Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking, saying something along the lines of "The water isn't washing off the blood. It isn't coming off!" And repeatedly rubbing her hands, seeing blood that wasn't actually there. So basically, that part of the song is metaphorical.
"Fallen so far from where we were before."
She's gone into this mess too far and cannot escape it.
"You'll never find what you've been searching for."
Possibly the silence of their secret or making her husband king.
"Something to fill the void and make up for all those missing pieces of you."
She feels that her husband has lost something by killing the king before him.
"Like I could only dream to do."
She wished that she could fill the void, but in reality, I think she made it greater and bigger.
"Everything that we believed in was a lie."
She probably feels betrayed by the three witches and their prophecy, though it was she who convinced Macbeth to kill the king.
"Find a way to blur the line."
Not sure, cover up the crime they commited maybe?
"And we never learn, so we fall down again."
I'm guessing that Lady Macbeth just pushed him further, not learning from her first mistake. So she falls further every time someone is killed.
"Heaven help me find a way to dream within this nightmare."
She is still clinging to the hope that everything is going to be OK.
"Cross the oceans in your mind."
Her husband also needed to pass obstacles of his own.
In the end, Lady Macbeth kills herself, finding the stress too great for her to handle. -
I think it's about a relationship that went wrong. At first I thought it was about Shaun Morgan, but I just don't anymore. I don't think Amy would write another song about him after CMWYS. Even just that one seemed rather harsh, and it's been several years. Possibly another relationship, or like a previous one said, Ben. The "a million miles from where we burned the bridge" thing makes it sound like it started off bad and just got worse. It sounds like a battle of trying to get up the strength to "say goodbye" or "pretending everything's going to be alright". And the title, Oceans, gives the impression that there is a great distance between them, physically, or more likely, mentally. I am guessing mentally, because of "cross the oceans in my mind/find the strength to say goodbye/in the end you never can wash the blood from your hands." *light bulb* It might be about the same person as The Last Song I'm Wasting On You. Though that seems a bit odd, seeing as TLSIWOY was written before, but it was obviously a song about an abusive relationship. The thing about washing blood from hands just sparked that thought, so I get it if it doesn't suit the song. Well…that's all I came up with, soooo…yeah.
-
I dont know if I'm just crazy, but I also believe that this song could be about Shakespeare's play Macbeth. When you really think about it, "can never wash the blood from your hands" isnt the only line that bares similarities to the play.
-
I agree with your interpretation, it makes perfect sense. But I think the blood is metaphorical. "You can't wash the blood off your hands" is an idiom that simply means you got yourself into a mess that you can't get out of. In this case, the deterioration of their relationship.

This music is clearly about Ben Moody's left.He and Amy argued a lot and was quite impossible for them to continue together even loving the same thing (evanescence).
"Don't wanna be the one to walk away
But I can't bear the thought of one more day
I think I finally understand what it means to be lost"
Even if they try, they couldn't cuz:
"Can't find the road to lead us out of this
A million miles from where we burned the bridge
Can't keep pretending that every thing's gonna be alright
With the whole world falling down on me"
I think that maybe things got really bad, and maybe Ben hit her cuz she talks about blood in hands
"Cross the oceans in my mind
Find the strength to say goodbye
In the end you never can
Wash the blood from your hands"
Amy realizes that things aren't the same anymore, and that she will never be able to fill Ben cuz he is just too broken
"Falling so far from where we were before
You'll never find what you've been searching for
Something to fill the void and
Make up for all of those missing pieces of you
Like I could only dream to do"
Oh, we never learn
So we fall down again
Hurt me, hurt me
Find your way to dream within this nightmare
