Evanescence: Whisper Meaning
Whisper Lyrics
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
if I will it all...

#1 top rated interpretation:If taken from a religious standpoint,
(Ok I don't have much but):
She's taken all she can, she feels on her own, like the God she believes in isn't doing anything for her, and she's ready to give up and accept evil, because He's never helped her- in the last verse, 'Fallen angels' could be Lucifer's army- and "she beckons me" could be the Angel of death.
"Forsaking all I've fallen for, I rise to meet the end"- she's ready to just drop all she's tried and now is saying with the latin that if God is there, prove it now. -

#2 top rated interpretation:I was talking with a friend, and he had a really cool interpretation of what "Whisper" is about: Jesus' crucifixion and descent into hell.
Now, before everyone freaks out :-), I read an interview with Ben, in which he was saying they are not a Christian band, and he said the two main songs with spiritual meaning were Tourniquet and Whisper. Tourniquet is easy - Amy said in an interview it was about the Southern Baptist doctrine that if you commit suicide, you automatically go to hell, so this song was about someone committing suicide and then wondering if God would still accept them. But I could never figure out how Whisper was spiritual, and what it meant.
If you saw the Passion recently, you might remember - when Jesus is on the cross, God has to abandon him so that he can take on the sin of the world. Jesus cries out "My God why have you forsaken me?" That's the "speaking to the atmosphere no one's here and I fall into myself" certainly the pain must have been incredible ... etc. When Christ descends into hell, that's the "fallen angels at my feet" etc. Anyway, if you think about it this way, it's a very humanizing way to think about how Jesus must have felt, with pain and fear.
Just an idea, something to think about! My friend certainly got me thinking about it! -

#3 top rated interpretation:ACTUALLY: the latin means "save us from danger, save us from evil."
look it up, yall. =/ -
It's about the struggle and internal battle against suicidal thoughts.
The POV is in pain yet fighting the 'whispers'.
Don't turn away (don't give in to the pain)
Don't try to hide (though they're screaming your name)
Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind them)
Don't turn out the light (never sleep, never die)
It's like convincing herself to not do it and don't give in.
The song ends with the chant "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum" which means 'Save me from danger, save me from evil" -
In this song I see an heretic chased and then tortured for her beliefs. She expects to be saved by someone, but the initiative fails. Even without help the heretic doesn't give up to the fear and pain caused by the people:
-don't turn away -> don't give into the pain (torture)
-don't try to hide -> though they are screaming you name (they are mad with her)
-don't close your eyes -> god knows what lies behind them (she is doing the right thing and therefore doesn't give up, even if doing so could save her from the pain "I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away") -
it about sucide she dying in what a sucide attempt but she changing her mind she knows too late but realised she doesnt want to die i love this song i like the chanting in latin which tranlased "save me danger save from evil" very dark
-
it a sucidal cry for help she want to kill herself but she not sure though with it i the ending where chant i think its spanish for "i dont wanna die"
-
I am wrong about this I think. But I thought Whisper was about her in a dream and she kept in falling endlessly and at the part: "Forsaking all I fallen for I rise to meet my end" she finally landed and woken from her dream (or nightmare) I just thought it was about a girl who was dreaming of falling forever and she wished to be saved. I'm very shocked it was based on religion though, I was thinking crazy but we all are different to our opinions. :)
-
I never thought this was about religion. From what I heard, it's sounds like she's in a hospital or something, and she and the person with her are dying. And she's praying for them not to die, but she's starting to and she's seeing things. I could be wrong, but that's my take. It always sounded like something you'd hear in a vampire movie, am I right.
-
I have heard the other comments on here and it sounds pretty good, makes more sense then mine, of course this is just like a cool way to look at it, not accurate, not like "Well Amy said-" No, it's just like a story, but hear me out if you want, it's not that bad (I hope)
Well.. I'v kinda looked at it like facing your demons, metaphorically. and yeah, for the beginning I would guess it would be speaking to god, or someone who can save her, make her feel calm and even again.
"No ones here and I fall into myself"
Either no one came to save her.. Or she is alone and has let it all come over her, to me, when you're alone, is when you can really show yourself (opinion)
"This truth drives me into madness"
Seeing the way the world really is and what it can do and what it has been doing and also for what it's created deep within her, it can drive someone mad, and we all have our dark opinions on life (okay sorry that sounded a bit strange uh.. moving on!)
"I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away"
..Kind of like her demons are speaking to her, giving her idea's it can end easily and she knows it
But she won't back down
she won't give in, she stands strong
as for the chorus I imagine she is speaking as to what I said before Don't hide from them don't give in..
for "I'm frightened by what I see -- " etc
I imagine She knows what's coming, she knows there will be more hurt "Some how I know that there's much more to come"
"immobilized by fear" They have taken control and soon to be in more pain, she is afraid, then she goes back to the thought of letting it all go and ending she can stop it all.
for "Fallen angels at my feet -- " etc. I imagine it goes by all that she has seen, it still haunts her today they still force the other option and she doesn't know weather to give in and she almost takes it.. to let go of everything she has worked for.. but then the chorus comes in for her to stand strong and face the wrong not to give in..
Okay! so... I am so sorry for this if anyone hates it. The others are 100% more reasonable, and no that's not what this song is about it's just looking at it from a different perspective, it's cool to look at songs from every angle :)
(and yeah.. I do suck horribly at words xD ) -
I think it's about war, like her seeing people maybe people she loves dying all around and waiting for it to be her.
-
This song IS religious. It is about dying and going to Hell, and then asking God forgive but realising it was too late. You can see this in the beggining. She realises God isn't listening her and then she thinks she's dreaming, and says: "Speaking to the atmosphere, no one is here and I fall into myself" but then she sees this is truth, she's in hell and she can't do nothing about it and says: "this truth drives me into madness"
"I can stop the pain if I will it all away" she still has a little hope.
Chorus: she is saying what ppl can do to not go to Hell. "Don't turn away (don't give in to the pain) Don't try to hide (trought they're screaming your name) Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind then) Don't turn out the light" (never sleep, never die)"
With "never sleep, never die" I think she means that if you never forget what He said you won't "die"= go to hell.
"I'm frightened by what I see..." She is very scaried, shes in Hell.
"Fallen angels at my feet" demons everywhere. "Whispered voices at my ear" saying horrible things to her. "Death before my eyes, lying next to me I fear" bible says that if you go to hell, youre REALLY dying, if u go to heaven, u live forever. " she beckons me shall i give in upon my end should i begin forsaking all ive fallen for i rise to meet the end" shes forsaking all shes fallen for, and turns to god.
And then there are the lost souls in hell begging for god to save them from danger and from evil. -
It sounds like a song about someone in depression or coma, but they're rising to the surface. They feel pain and they're scared that the people in the world have given up on them 'Don't walk away' saying don't go I'm almost there you know?
-
Actually, that other anonymous person was right; how they had the Latin means "you [plural form, as in more than one] save from danger, you [plural form again] save from evil". The plural "you" would be like addressing a room full of people as opposed to one. The root "male" (mahl-leh) is where we get words such as malicious, malevolent, and, for any Disney fans, Maleficent. So really it's "You save from danger. You save from evil."
-
My personal interpretation of this song is that it's about seeing ex-Christians who have lost their faith, and doubting your own faith because of this.
"Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself"
This could be either the initial struggle with faith, and feeling that God isn't with you, or it could be about losing all your Christian friends and feeling alone in your faith.
"This truth drives me
Into madness"
Obviously, she's troubled by her newfound loneliness.
"I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
if I will it all away"
She's going to try to keep her faith, even with all the evil she's feeling.
In the chorus, she's talking to/about people who have lost their faith ("Don't turn away, don't give in to the pain") "Though they're screaming your name" could be about the demons calling to her friends, and "God knows what lies behind them" could be about how God knows what caused them to lose their faith.
The second verse, again, is about the pain of seeing all these sinners.
The bridge is my favorite part of the song.
"Fallen angels at my feet"
The people who have lost their faith.
"Whispered voices in my ear"
The demons who are tempting her.
"Death before my eyes
Lying next to me I fear
She beckons me
Shall I give in
Upon my end shall I begin
Forsaking all I've fallen for
I rise to meet the end"
She's questioning whether or not to "give in to the pain" and let the demons win.
Well, that's my interpretation. I hope it makes sense. -
I feel this song has a lot to do with the fall of man." Catch me as I fall"this is Adam's point of view of what went down in the garden of Eden. The part where she says"say you're here and it's all over now"that is Adam talking to God."speaking to the atmosphere no one's here and I fall into myself"Adam talking to God again"this truth drives me into madness I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away"Adam feeling guilty about giving into temptation. The second verse"I'm frightened by what I see but somehow I know that there's much more to come immobilized by my fear and soon to be blinded by tears"fear of what he and Eve has done."Fallen angels at my feet"Satan and his army."Whispered voices at my ear"Satan and his army whispering to him for giving in so easy."Death before mu eyes"being dead spirituality though original sin, eating the forbidden fruit, that God told them not to eat."Lying next to Mr I fear she beckons me shall I give in"this is about Eve,when she beckons him into eating the forbidden fruit and he gives in."Upon my end shall I begin"the end of their immortality,to begin as mortals."Forsaking all I've fallen forum rise to meet the end"losing Paradise though eating the forbidden fruit and knowing that they are in deep sh*t.The end,so he thinks! It's not the end of them.think about it...Paradise lost!

Honestly I do not believe that this song is very religious at all. I believe that this song is having a sixth sense and all the spirits are messing with her head because she is new at all of this. For example, "Speaking to the atmosphere" is a reference to talking to something that others can't see in which case clairvoyance would be involved. "Fallen angels at my feet" since clairvoyance attracts spirits this could be referencing to demons that have made themselves known. "Whispered voices at my ear
Death before my eyes" Spirits like to get right next to you and start talking, and death before my eyes could mean the spirits seen right in front of her. And lastly, "I know I can stop the pain, if I will it all away" is true for clairvoyance, if you don't want it and just will for the ability not to be there then eventually the ability and all that comes with it will go away. :) -
I believe that the song is about God versus Satan... In the first verse she talks about how satan has come to her to tell her he is here and there is nothing she can do about it. she speaks back to satan and begins to fall.. in the chours she talks about facing her fears. she says "Dont close your eyes God knows what lies behind them... In other words, when she walks with God she cannot be harmed... In the end of the song i strongly believe that God has won the battle of the devil; and she is now free from the demon that tried to take her soul...
