Fall Out Boy: Thriller Meaning
Thriller Lyrics
But by fall we were a cover story

Make us poster boys for your scene
But we are not making our acceptance speech
I have found the safest place to keep all our old mistakes

Thriller is truly a story of what happened to Fall Out Boy. As Jay-Z states in the start of the album version "We dedicate this album to everybody that people said they couldn't make it", it's about FOB's unlikely rise to stardom. In the beginning verse of the song it says "Make us poster boys for your scene, but we aren't making an acceptance speech." It basically is a fancy way of saying that they are the kings of the Chicago Emo Scene (Which they are), and that they don't like how the scene is (they aren't making an acceptance speech). In the chorus, "Cry on the couch where the poets come to life, Fix me in 45". It's describing a therapist session, as a psychaitrist session lasts usually around 45 minutes. "Crowds are won and lost and won again but our hearts beat for the diehards". FOB is trying to say that they know they lose fans with some of the albums and singles they publish, but they don't care and they only care for their diehard fans that have followed them since their start.

"Cry on the couch, all the poets come to life. Fix me in 45" Totally excellent point with the therapy session. This ia probably the initial idea when this was written, however, the beauty of poetry is it's vast aspects. On that note, I believe it applies to a typical artist ending. A stereotypical artist never really comes to life until they have died. 45 to me refers to a gun ending a life, beginning of a poet. I don't know, perhaps too much thought for a fall out boy song.

Everything sounds good. I do have to say though that when they say that they took "threes across the board" I feel like they mean they took ratings of 3 out of 10 across the board. As if there were a panel of judges judging them. At first I also thought it was talking about their 3 hits, but when I thought about it more I realized it says "threes". Then, sequentially in the song, they were "the cover story" meaning they got better recognition. Also, about the 45, I think that maybe it takes on both meanings. I tend to lean towards the idea that the cd's 45 minutes is a therapy session.

The second and third posts are amazing interpretations, but when I heard the song I thought that when they say "last summer we took threes across the board, but by fall we were a cover story" meant something else. I totally agree about their 3 big songs on the charts, but when they say by fall, I took it as by their mistakes and mess ups they became famous. I mean, they had 3 songs that blew up but from them messing up (like maybe Pete's naked pics on the web) they got tons of publicity but it wasn't from their music. I don't know, tell me if you disagree it was the first thing I thought though.

I completely agree with the second person. That totally explains the whole song. I would also add that he says "we are not making our accepting speech" this means that they are not getting conceited or cocky. and "I have found the safest place to keep all of our mistakes. every dot com's refreshing for a journal update" this refers to their online journals
