Rebels of the Sacred Heart Lyrics

Now I`m aimin' for heaven
But probably wind up down in hell
Where upon this altar I will hang my guilt ridden head
But it`s time I`ll take before I begin
Three sheets to the wind, Three sheets to the wind
Rebels are we, though heavy our...

When I saw Flogging Molly here in Melbourne this past May, Dave King introduced this song with words to the affect of "This is a song about growing up a loser. This is a song about being Catholic".

SO obviously persecution as a result of the history in Ireland is a central point of the song.

    but there's also this...

Genuflect all you refugees who fled the land
    Now on guilt you kneel
And say a prayer for those left behind
From beyond the pale to the Northern sky
So you saved your shillins and your last six pence
Cause in God`s name they built a barbed wire fence
Be glad you sailed for a better day
But don`t forget there`ll be hell to pay

meant for those who left Ireland to escape the troubles obviously....

This song is about the IRA and how they fought the English crown whom forced Ireland into being protestant... it's all through out the song but the enslavement of Irish Catholics. The rebels of the sacred heart is literally talking about the Catholics who Rose up against tyranny and where locked up and even killed by the English.

"No ball or chain, no prison shall keep. We're the rebels of the sacred heart" stating that Catholics in Northern Ireland are the minority compared to Anglican Protestants and were once banned from their practice by the king, which is why they are Rebels of the Sacred Heart (heart of Jesus, a common worship among Catholics). "Bless me Father, for I have sinned... But its the same old story, again and again and again... Well such is the bread, of an everyday life, from morning to noon, to the shadow-less night." He says this because many people criticize both the Church and the Bible for its seemingly never ending repetition, however he relates this to "the bread of everyday life" meaning that our lives are a constant repetitive cycle: eat, go to work/school, eat, go home, watch TV, sleep, repeat. All of these things give our lives meaning and purpose. So why should we not open our hearts to faith, instead of being hypocritical and bashing it for its repetitiveness?

If you were raised catholic in northern Ireland you were raised behind barbed wire, Like the crown of thorns that surrounds the sacred heart of Jesus. And just like that crown that pierced the sacred heart and allowed the life giving blood of Christ to spill forth, so does the barbed wire on our catholic hearts of freedom and so there will be blood at any cost and no matter how much barbed wire they put up or ball or chain or prisons we will always be catholic and always fight to remain free for our beliefs. And because you fled persecution to a new world don't forget those that stayed behind to fight for your freedom and the blood that was shed will be paid for in purgatory and since I have to pay for the blood tack on the drink as well to my list of sins and I will be followed for my sins

it is about how irish on both sides of the atlantic are expected to be catholic and are brought up that way by their parents and schools in the fear of God until they believe it to and repeat the cycle on their children.

This song is probably about being an irish catholic in america, and how those who fled their homeland (and their descendants) now have little more than their religion to tie them to the old country. As a result, they sometimes may feel guilt for leaving, mixed with pride in their heritage.

It's the unified group of disenchanted perocial school rebels that protest everything. Any of us that have been a party to this group knows and understands what they are trying to say..

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
