I think one of them moved away, because the song says "and you set your sails for better days in south austrailia"

It's about two friends who had a fight, or drifted apart. The singer is recalling that in retrospect, the events make much more sense ('cause you learn so much, about someone, a brother or a swine). And his friend, he wonders if his friend also relives the past, either literally, by walking the street at night, or just by remembering those years.
