Foster the People: Broken Jaw Meaning
Song Released: 2012
Broken Jaw Lyrics
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
I've broken it a lot
All the words come out my broken jaw
I don't know anything
But then I act like I know everything
Don't wanna talk about it
What do you see when you dream about it
Well I had them...
-
My interpretation goes further than most people, even most of the lyrics I interpret as someone who is going through a lot of bad things and has people turning away from him. In the part where he says he can't read the person, I see it as a doubt of not knowing if that person is still with him or not.now the ending, i have no idea about what it could be
-
Its about dissociating. When your costantly dissociating it is your down and your high is reality thus "coming back down" it also messes with your idea of self like "quick tell me whats my name im the same ive just been rearranged". And you dont want to talk about because no one can really do anything to fix it. Also sometimes when you dissociating emitions are hard like being happy "smile through a choke inside"
-
I think it's about a guy who feels like things can't get any worst and on top of that he's lonely and insecure and he's losing everything that he use to be, the accurate lyrics are.
Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
I've broken every law
All the words come out my broken jaw
I don't know anything
But then I act like I know everything
Don't want to talk about it
What do you see when you dream about it?
I had been broke down from my enemies
I'm drifting farther from my memories
And then you take it away
Everyday I'm fighting 'cause I can't read you
Lost in the moment, then I come back down
Lost in the sight I try to reach out
Just a little bit closer, then I come back down
You tell me, "What's my name?"
I'm the same I've just been rearranged
Smile through a joke inside
Yeah, I've been hiding with nothing to hide
Don't want to talk about it
What do you see when you dream about it?
I had been broke down from my enemies
Just holding a piece of what's been left of me
And then you take it away
Everyday I'm fighting 'cause I can't read you
Lost in the moment, then I come back down
Lost in the sight I try to reach out
Just a little bit closer, then I come back down
Pushing me, pushing me, I can feel it, yeah
Just a little bit higher, then I come back down
Climbing over people 'cause I've nothing
I'm waiting, I'm waiting around
Sometimes you find yourself waiting,
Waiting for someone to come around
And it's hopeless, hoping to be found
Then it arrives and says, "You're perfect, my love"
And I,
I know why
I know why
I know why
But you said, "I don't know"
You said, "I don't know"
You said, "I don't know"
You said, "I don't know, you don't know" [x3]
You said, "I don't know"
You said, "I don't know"
You said, "I don't know"
So take it away, yeah
When you find and heal my broken jaw, yeah
Lyin' near where I slayed my hero, yeah
What you need is hiding in yourself, yeah
And then he finds somebody he loves and understands that life doesn't always go your way and that you have to keep trying but she doesn't understand yet that why he says "You said I don't know. -

It's about self doubt and feeling hopeless, Mark has said this himself
-
Broken Jaw is about someone who can't stop doing coke, and he is feeling bad about it and asks someone (probably a lover) to 'fix him'.
It is well known that coked up people's jaw tremble uncontrollably and they tend to tell the truth in an agressive way. -
It's about someone who can't control themself when they speak because of their insecurities, who only desires to have someone understand and change them.
-
It is about breaking your jaw and getting it repaired at the dentist.
-
I think this song is about someone who can't retain themselves from acting out of the ordinary to hide all their insecurities and sometimes being annoying and showing off in front of people masking what they're feeling on the inside.
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

The hardest part to hear is the chorus, but here's what I've got, (not perfect, but close and the best I could hear):
First chorus:
everything else i thought would just remain*
but i still don't know anything
i turn back down
watch on my sides when i try to reach out
just a little bit faster
then i come back down
Second chorus:
everything else i thought would just remain*
but i still don't know anything
i turn back down
watch on my sides when i try to reach out
just a little bit faster
then i come back down
you're pushing me pushing me and i can feel it
just a little bit harder
then i turn back down
climbing my people cause i know my name **
waiting and waiting around, yea
*I know "everything else" and "remain" are correct*
**I'm pretty sure about the "climbing my people" part, not the rest of that line**
Again, my apologies for anything wrong, just had to put out what i know was right and hopefully someone can pick up the pieces... -

maybe he's talking about a lack of self control in the way that he or someone he know can't control that fact that they behave erratically and almost obnoxiously to cover up their insecurities and self doubt, like having a large ego because you're unsure of yourself
-
Quiet self doubt.
