From First to Last: Emily Meaning
Emily Lyrics
It's the only thing that I've been waiting for a time
Regardless of our distance and our hope.
'Cause we're swept up by pretty eyes and a letter for a time
...the only thing that I've been waiting for.
I hope it's...
-
Ok well I don't know whether it was written by Sonny or Matt, but I don't care. I'm just gonna say what I think it's about.
To me, it sounds like it's about a long distance relationship. As he sung in the song, "he will never give up trying cause you're everything to me."
And when he sings, "Thunder storms could never stop me." It sounds like he would try visiting her no matter how horrible the weather was.
Even when he says "days seem like years in this month of December." It sounds like he is saying how slow life goes by when he doesn't see her.
And the most obvious line, "Regardless of our distance...and our hope grows greater."
"I hope it's something worth the waiting." Sounds like they don't always get to see each other very often.
"Because there's no one in the world like Emily," he was willing to keep trying to have a long distance relationship with her. -
FFTL's old singer left the band during the record, so the band found Sonny through MySpace and asked him to play guitar. Matt Good was gonna be the lead singer, but Sonny had singing parts in the song "Featuring Some Of Your Favorite Words", and when the rest of the band heard him singing it they decided he should be lead vocals, therefore Matt played guitar and sang backup vocals. Sonny wrote the songs "Emily" (proof: he sings it solo now and fftl doesn't sing it at all) and "The One Armed Boxer Vs. The Flying Guillotine" (proof: last lines of the song are;
"How do I address a letter to my generation?
'SONNY', she said, 'save yourself the postage'
How do I address a letter to my generation?
'SONNY', she said, 'sing it in person'
Now that that's all cleared up, I'm not sure exactly about specifics but I THINK (emphasis on the think) that Sonny wrote "Emily" for a girlfriend he was dating long distance. They broke up, but it is NOT a song of the past, he has sung it since then but changed the lyrics to "Hillary" (I think it's his new girlfriend) instead of "Emily".
There, that's my thoughts/opinions, you don't have to agree with them, I'm just saying. -
Basically, Matt Good wrote this song. He wrote all of the songs on Dear Diary in two weeks. Halfway through production, Sonny joined the band as lead guitarist and Matt was lead singer. When they were doing "Featuring Some of Your Favorite Words," they realized how amazing Sonny's vocals were, so they switched, Matt to lead guitar, Sonny to lead vocals. Sonny was 15 when they were recording, so I don't see how he could've been 16 when he wrote the song. Anyway, enough with the history of From First to Last that apparently 1 or 2 of you know, and on with the meaning of the song. This information is in multiple bio's of them all over the internet.
Regardless of what was happening in this person's life, he was definitely in a long distance relationship, and madly in love with the person, probably having been together a while, and having just become so distant. Things are still happy because neither of them are doubting their relationship yet, and they're waiting to see each other again.
Basically, it's the cliche, "We'll make it no matter what," that always inevitably ends. -
Yes, it is true that Sonny didn't do any work with any of the songs, EXCEPT for Emily. Emily was a song that Sonny originally wrote when he was 16 years old. He wrote the music and the lyrics. The proof that any of you need would be that if you go to see FFTL live now, they don't play Emily, but Sonny sings it (usually the toyshop remix) live at solo shows. Emily is the only song that Sonny wrote for Dear Diary.
Funny thing about the song: Since Sonny was 16 when he wrote it, he wasn't good with grammar and spelling, and made up the word coldens. If you hear him play it live he says "the winter makes me cold" instead of "coldens me." -

I thought that Emily was the girl that cheated on Sonny and got pregnant with another guy....but I don't know. I'm hearing all the other things...so I don't know what happened anymore. Is she dead? Is she imaginary? Idk. GRR!
-
Ok so here's the deal. you are all wrong, those of you who say Emily isn't a real person. She is real. I know because I met her in march when I met Sonny Moore. The song is a song that Sonny wrote for Emily when they were going out. The are broken up now, but the still remain really close friends. btw, Sonny and Emily are some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet!
-
Ok so uhhh. This song is about Sonny's girlfriend that died and yes, he wrote only Emily and one armed boxer
-
lets all stop arguing, sonny has left the band.
