Hozier: Swan Upon Leda Meaning
Song Released: 2022
Swan Upon Leda Lyrics
-
this is a song about women's rights that was put out shortly after Roe V Wade was overturned.
The title itself is a reference to a story in Greek mythology where Zeus comes down in the form of a dove and rapes a girl named Leda.
The lyrics "A grandmother smuggling meds" Is talking about the people who smuggle meds for abortions across borders. My personal favorite lyrics, the chorus, "What never belonged to angels
Had never belonged to men". In this case, angels would mean the gods such as Zeus who would pretty much just grab any girl he fancied, acting as if he owned them. Hozier is saying that no woman has ever belonged to the gods, and will never belong to men as they are their own people and deserve respect same as any other.
