Jackson Browne: For A Dancer Meaning
For A Dancer Lyrics
Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be...

I fell in love with my beloved wife listening to this whole album, "Late for the Sky". (that song was played in the movie "Taxi Driver") But I particularly loved "For a Dancer". The words are inspirational and unique. Back then they were just love meaningful words. And although there was a reference to death and "losing sight of you", it wasn't until my wife died in 2007 that the words had a more true and personal meaning for me. Then I felt true sadness about "crying as they eased her down".

Seems her is questioning faith and whether or not there is an afterlife or God.

I believe his wife commited suicide is the reason he wrote this song and feels guilty about it.

My only beautiful son took his life at 36— I always cry when I hear it. If only I could see him again, if only for a minute.

So much in this song. The idea that yes, people will die, but they don't leave us. The idea that we are the sum of the influences that impact is throughout our livez. Finally that we influence others lives with the " seeds" we throw but we will never see those results. Very profound way to think of how we can help of hurt others and that we never really die.

Life's Final Act! This song has such monumental meaning when I think about the lives and passing of four special people that I was so blessed and fortunate to have crossed paths with; Kathy Ann Barefoot and my precious niece - Nikki (they were so darn young); Stephen Frost (my best and only friend) and Staff Sergeant Liam Flynn, my son-in-law and a valiant US Marine who gave his all. It is so easy for me to get so totally lost in this song. The song draws me into an obscure and far away place where I sometimes tearfully seek but can never seem to find the answers I‘m so desperately searching for - perhaps there just aren‘t any. I love the lyrics, “I Must Have Thought You‘d Always Be Around” and “I Don’t Know What Happens When People Die.” As a Christian, I know the deserving ones get their eternal rite of passage but I’m not quite sure who receives that sacred gift. And please make sure you give the ones you love constant reminders just how special they are because you or them will not always be around.

How one deals with death. On a personal note, this song hits home with 2 different (and very special) people, each verse providing constant, distinct reminders of each individual. Truly an amazing song.
