The Pretender Lyrics
-
The acknowledgment that no individual can escape their inevitable outcome in our society and economic system. In order to survive we all have to become pretenders. Say a prayer for the pretenders because we are all pretenders

I grew up in the 60's...the hippie counterculture generation......the flower children wanted to live a new and better life other than "chasing the legal tender" as in the"Establishment".....however, over time, it was just another false hope and dream, as most young people of that time eventually assimilated into the "Establishment" that they seemed to resent...I remember my friend's wife saying, when we were into our late 20's and working our jobs, "I watched every one of you sell out!"....this song reminds me of that...

JACKSON BROWNE, a great American songwriter that gave us ''The Pretender'' song that many of us struggled in trying to make a honest living with the hope in finding true love as honestly as possible with ourselfs in between what was legal and not, with the hope to hold out, not to sell out to become just another greedy pervert, a stranger to ourselfs for the easy meat to earn our money.
