James Taylor: Rainy Day Man Meaning
Rainy Day Man Lyrics
All you wanted from the start was to cry, girl
It looks like another fall
Your friends, they don't seem to help at all
Now when you're feeling kind of cold and small
Just look up your rainy day man

This piece is clearly about his dealer in Greenwich Village New York although he has always denied it. The word sun or any variation thereof, such as sunny, when studied in context, especially during his younger years as a songwriter, and his predilection to write about his personal life experiences is, in my opinion, a reference to heroin. He has always been my favorite musician, bar none, thus explaining my interest in the meaning of his lyrics, which have always been difficult to explain, like trying to decipher a crossword puzzle. The only question for me is if he was referencing a woman as his drug buddy as this always helps with the loneliness of addiction but is never lasting.
